So you just arrived here from twitter and it's quiet. Real quiet. That's because there's no algorithm here designed to drive engagement(which equals profit).

Here, you are the algorithm. It's up to you to find and follow people that are interesting to you. You can also see who they follow and who else follows them, as you build it up, it gets more interesting.

Also, if you find people you don't like or entire instances you don't like, you can mute or block them. You are in control.

Instead of posting stuff on #Twitter and then having a bot or something link it here, why not post a #Toot here and then have a bot crosspost it to Twitter? That way we get the original post and people on #Birdsite get to say, "Hey, what's this #Fediverse stuff I'm seeing all the time now?"

I'm totally delighted with being able to sit outside with my lunch, after the day started with rain. Just the construction noise from next door isn't totally fun but lots better than the screaming baby somewhere in the neighbourhood from earlier. It sounded like a wound up toy that had been recorded: the same piercing siren-like wail over and over and over again. I don't know how parents cope, you're all saints.

At least my mom thinks it's weird that Fox News is showing UFO videos while Biden is in town.

this is for a physical machine about "spoon theory," an idea created by disability activist Christine Miserandino to illuminate how those with chronic illness only have a certain amount of energy to do things in a day.

it is broadly applicable to energy in general--we only have a fixed amount of it each day, and it is okay to choose how it is spent.

Ooh, I rediscovered cinema! I only saw two films in the last 5+ years. The earlier one of those was at the tail end of 2019 when I decided I'd go back lots. Yeah and then Covid struck. Boo.
I finally went back in the two weeks and now I know how much I missed it! Particularly in a cosy independent cinema. It's the being there, the big screen, the people you go with, the comparing notes chat afterwards. I really love it.
I'll be seeing Everything Everywhere All at Once soon. Can't wait.

Hello, this is my first post. I’m desperately trying to fathom this out. I defected from Twitter. Now I’m in no-man’s land.

The best thing about flash fiction is that you get to sing the Flash Gordon theme whenever you hit "submit".

Dear Mastodon community, is there any way to mute or filter out toots with a specific phrase? Like Wordle. I really, really do not need to see those. Maybe it'll blow over soon but in the meantime...

Hi everyone, I'm new to Mastodon, and I write fantasy fiction (adult and YA).

I'm querying agents for my first novel (epic fantasy) while writing my second (gender-flipped Three Musketeers-meets-Treasure Island with a dark academia vibe) in my spare time.

I love my day job as an academic (PhD in medieval lit), but here I'll be be posting about fiction writing, the query/rejection (!) process, and things that I'm reading and watching.

I look forward to meeting you!

The other day I saw a poll asking “what made you stay at mastodon”. Choices were like “my friends are here”, “dunno, I just stayed”, or some specific good aspects of this place. That was rather ironic as my reason which is also most Chinese users’ reason, is not listed. To this English speaking world, it’s beyond imagination for many that people tooting in Mandarin would most likely call themselves “cyber refugee”. Because we had nowhere to go. Because everywhere was censored and we had to flee.
