"We waited. We submitted a few more rounds. Everyone loved it and no one wanted it, so we paused submitting. This is the point at which some writers and agents cut their losses and try again with a new book, a new query, even a new agent. But the thought of leaving my agent was exhausting. Plus, I liked her and she liked me.

And this is where the biggest lesson I learned from my querying days kicked in—it ain’t over till it’s over."

CatapultHow to Get a Literary Agent | Lisa BubertQuery smarter, not harder, to find the right agent for you.

@Lisabubert @writers Jeez. Nice piece but daunting.

I'm in a strange place. I wanted to avoid all that (I ain't no spring chicken and this is my first novel). My Plan A is to self-publish in a variety of forms, but now an editor I hired, a pretty dang good one by all accounts (mine too) is urging me to submit it to a literary publishing house who she says "would be delighted to get their hands on this book."

Do I want to dive into the maw? I dunno. Gotta finish it first.

@Lisabubert @writers Yeah, but what does trad publishing really offer? We can do the nuts and bolts of actually publishing (with paid help). We're expected to do most of the marketing (especially after first few months). % royalties are derisory. Seems to me all they can offer is submissions to comps and access to broadsheet reviews. Most trad published authors in UK don't make more than £8k per year, then they get dropped! :D

@dbmacinnes To each their own! In the US, traditional publishing offers a far further distribution reach. (Bookstores and libraries don't tend to stock self-pubbed titles and for good reason, tbh.) I also rely on my agent to protect my interests in terms of rights. It's not just about getting a good advance or royalty rate -- it's about sub-rights too. Options for film, audio, etc. Agents are meant to grow careers, not hit it out the park for one time only.

I self-publish ebooks using Smashwords who distribute to pretty much all ebook publishers for a couple of cents. you set the price. They offer a free 'how-to', and do all the conversion for you.
