✒️Motivation: Growing up is just learning to parent yourself
I recently heard this way of looking at self-motivation or self-control and I wish I had heard it years and years ago. Unfortunately, an idea has to be phrased a certain way to really click for someone. That's why I'm always trying to keep learning even if the topic is a repeat.
I wish my mom had told me growing up that adulthood is just having to parent yourself, and that it's an uncomfortable skill that gets easier with practice. 💬
Unfortunately, of the Four Tendencies (via Gretchen Rubin) I am the Rebel. This means no one can tell me what to do, not even myself. If you're not a Rebel, this might seem incomprehensible. But my entire inner life is just a battle against myself.
Rebels have to use ego. For example, telling myself "I'm the kind of person who does the dishes every day" vs "Do the gd dishes it's not that hard" (👈 instant resistance) works 100% better but it's still always me convincing me. 💬
