@eta @BryanLunduke is the reason I got curious enough to install my own Mastodon instance and try it out, and he is the first person in the fediverse that I followed LOL

@msh @eta Nice! Been tempted to run my own instance (also for the show fans). How has the experience been?

@BryanLunduke @eta From a technical standpoint it has been a breeze! There was a bit of a learning curve to get verification emails etc. going but once it is set up it is quite low maintenance.

The most work would probably just be moderation if you had a large instance with wide open registration but if it was just you and your patrons it would not be a big deal...

@eta @BryanLunduke Mastodon is a bit resource hungry but a sub-1000 instance should run OK on a VM with 4GiB RAM and 2 to 4 vCPUs and a generous amount of storage.

I deployed it using Docker and it makes upgrades much easier...that is how I recommend doing it.

An alternative I might look at is pleroma.social as it appears more resource efficient and is planning ActivityPub support. I've also been experimenting interally with ActivityPub in Python for federated blogging.

@BryanLunduke @msh @eta If you do go for your own instance, check out Pleroma. I plan on migrating mine over to pleroma here soon.
