also, have been seeing this go around, so i'll catch up for the past two days!
1: i'm larissa! i typically write fantasy, but i've been trying to expand my horizons and write in more genres. currently i'm finishing up a scene from my nano project, which is about time travel. (i love time travel.)
then i'll probably jump back to my other WIP, which is a self-indulgent story about immortals with more than a little highlander influence. (it's 100% for me, and it's been a blast to write.)
2: from scratch; i actually have a really hard time coming up with new worlds and characters, so i tend to stick to my comfort zone of a batch of characters i've had for many many many years. i'd like to push myself next year to work on a brand-new project that requires all-new characters.
#authorconfession day 3! gonna keep them all in this thread.
i have two main characters in this project, and i think the answer is tenacity for both of them. π€ they just don't give up, even when the whole universe is against them. it can also be a flaw, because their goal comes before absolutely everything -- even the people they care for most. they justify it because their aim is to save the world, but it's not easy on them.
#authorconfession day 4: is it trite to say that i let flaws emerge organically? π€ sometimes they're guided by the story, and sometimes by the characters themselves, but i almost never look at characters and go "okay, so that one is prideful, and that one is arrogant, and THAT one is greedy." these things sort of come about naturally. (often i'm taken by surprise!)
#authorconfession day 5: i have two main WIPs, so i'll talk about both!
the first, my nano project (everybody says this is your home) starts in 590 AR, and covers the next ~10 years. ah, fantasy calendars π
on a related note i finally bought aeon timeline this year and WOW DID I NEED IT. it's as vital as scrivener and i regret not buying it years ago.
my other WIP doesn't have a name, so i just call it what it is: immortal au. starts in 2008/09, which i picked because i needed something modern, but not present day. picked that time period because it's post iphone launch, but before twitter really broke into the mainstream. one of the characters works in tech, so that makes for a very interesting time period to write about.
#authorconfession day 6: the first WIP is only possible at a very specific period of time (fantasy plot things, hooray), but this is a SUPER interesting question for the second! immortal au is more or less inspired by highlander so if itβs 1500 years in the future... i mean it has to be star wars right. itβd be the year 3500, itβd take place in space, and there would be futuristic swords that would almost certainly be lightsabers. so star wars. iβm down.
#authorconfession day 7: both, technically. i have two main characters, and one is fairly introverted while the other is extroverted. thatβs not to say that itβs the defining aspect of either of their personalities (and indeed they can be quite opposite it at times) but itβs a good baseline.
#authorconfession day 8: this question presupposes that happy endings can't be realistic and i'm not down with that at all. sure, the world's not all sunshine and rainbows, but that doesn't mean a happy ending can't be realistic. (i also very much dislike unhappy endings done purely for shock value, or because it just "Made Sense" when it really doesn't. it's okay to have happy endings! really!)
#authorconfession day 9: joke's on you, this story doesn't have one! ahh, literary fiction. (actually, it's more that there isn't a single antagonist, more group that's working against the protagonists. they're basically stalkers, so... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YvAYIJSSZY)
#authorconfession i don't write with socks on π± actually i use a very comfy blanket to keep myself warm... which is good, because it's been unusually cold here.
#authorconfession day 12: literally like 90%. this story has no plot because it's a very slow-paced story about a happily married couple. the storyline is largely centered around their day-to-day. it is extremely self-indulgent, because i wrote it for me, and i love it. i adore this kind of story and i'm thrilled to be writing one.
@larissa I have to ask, what kind of project is your WIP with that kind of word count?
@TechieInAK haha, it's actually a self-indulgent character-focused piece. characterization was always one of my weaknesses (i like writing elaborate, expansive plots) so i set out to write, well, the exact opposite. it's been great practice, and has been tons of fun.
@larissa Sounds like quite a project :)
#authorconfession day 16: my WIP takes place in two main settings so far - nyc and austin, tx. both of which i've been to multiple times, but i've never lived in either, so i've had to do lots of research. the next arc is a road trip, which i'm really looking forward to!
#authorconfession day 15: okay, word count report... probably easiest if i break it down like this.
current december total: 34,029
total wordcount of WIP: 533,395
2017 wordcount: 660,745 (goal is 700k)
