There used to be a lot of talk about how "addictive" Facebook is, but really, the company's "addictiveness" primarily springs from its ability to defend its walled garden and keep you hostage, by making the price of leaving severing contact with all the customers, communities and friends who stay behind.

As much as I love Gibson's later work, I think this has remained my favorite of his novels; it is, perhaps, his most poetic.

“Are you—are you sad?”

—No.

“But your—your songs are sad.”

—My songs are of time and distance. The sadness is in you. Watch my arms. There is only the dance. These things you treasure are shells.

“I—I knew that. Once.”

-- William Gibson, Count Zero

Imagine #libraries don't exist, but there's this person who thought of them and is trying to convince everyone else about them.

-Borrow books for free? People are going to steal them!
-You can just come in to use a computer? Well that's just going to be abused by freeloaders.
-Staff? Who is going to pay them? Why should my taxes be wasted subsidising access to books for people who haven't saved and bought their own?

How many amazing things do we dismiss? What is our society missing out on?

I could of sworn I saw a way to automatically push posts from a self-hosted WordPress blog to Mastodon (maybe it was shared by @feditips) but now I can't find it. Does anyone know the best way to do this?

I wish more lefties would internalize that hypocrisy is not a meaningful accusation to the right. Of course they're being hypocrites. That you are bound - by rules, standards, logic, human decency, some sort of fundamental moral consistency, anything at all - and they are not? That's their conception of what power is, and why they seek it. So they can exercise power, without constraint, and you cannot. That's the whole point.

Hypocrisy is the virtue-signaling of fascism.

Finding the title for a poem is almost never a problem for me but I'm really stuck coming up with one for he piece I'm working on now. I'm pretty sure that's all I still need to finish it.

What do you do when the right title just isn't making itself known to you?
