Idea of the day: a small fund for helping more people create on and for the open / federated Web. I.e. the "real web3", as I've said: writing.exchange/@matt/1075139

Does something like this exist already?

Like what if you could get small, no-strings-attached grants for buying a domain name and creating a personal website, or starting a Mastodon or Pixelfed instance? There's no need for a greater return on investment; the point is to get people using the Web itself.

I guess this could be sort of similar to @sir's "You should make a blog" effort from a while ago: drewdevault.com/make-a-blog

starting your own fedi (I'm referencing Mastodon/pleroma) server is *really* quiet if you don't already have some sort of social circle you've picked up from your previous/primary server that you can bring along

@famine True! I'm thinking especially if people have real-life friends they want to bring into the fediverse, etc., starting an instance makes sense

Like a DAO? I think you want a DAO lol

@feld That sounds unnecessarily complicated 🙂

@matt so is launching a nonprofit and dealing with all that nonsense and hooking up to some crowdfunding platform
