“Just talk about yourself and what you’re into.”
As a #queer #Jewish #trans #Texan there’s precious little I’m into and find worthwhile talking about that wouldn’t require a CW on this site, and there is absolutely a chilling effect to that.
Some of our lives are inextricably political, and I’m really not sure I belong on a platform that normalizes those with the most privilege (whose lives aren’t constantly politicized) and hides the voices of the most marginalized.
There are people whose daily experiences and most frequent musings are deemed apolitical, and these are people who enjoy cultural dominance—in the US that’s cishet, white, Christian, abled, etc.
And then there’s people whose daily experiences and most frequent musings are deemed #political, and these people experience marginalizations.
So y’all see, right, how creating norms that automatically show the first group’s posts, but automatically HIDES the second group’s posts, is a problem?
@simkern I hope it's okay that I'm sliding in here with my two cents: As a non-white queer person from the global south, I've decided I'm going to be unapologetically loud when talking about personal experiences that might be deemed "political". I'll apply CWs when I want to protect other marginalised groups from being triggered but not for the sake of cishet white people who are unable to comprehend that realities other than their own exist.
@wordswithnima yeah this is where I’m at too. I’ve been here about a week, and I’ve been listening to what Black folks coming over here from Twitter have been saying, and basically either the culture here needs to change or I don’t belong. Because the culture is going to only amplify dominant voices & hide others. That doesn’t sit right!
@simkern it doesn't sit right at all. We can only do our best to amplify the voices that people try to police & silence.
@simkern :wave: hello!
