Flipboard Culture Desk<p>Margaret Atwood has written a memoir, which will be out on Nov. 4. Why? "My publishers made me do it," the Canadian novelist told <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://flipboard.com/@Vogue" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>Vogue</span></a></span> in a new interview about the book. "When they first proposed it, I said, ‘Oh, that would be so boring.’ I mean, I wrote a book, I wrote another book, I wrote another book…Who’s going to read that?” Here's more on "Book of Lives: A Memoir of Sorts," plus Atwood's thoughts on what makes a good biography, "The Handmaid's Tale" and its pertinence, and Trump's fixation with making Canada the 51st U.S. state. "I think it’s lovely that the United States has recognized its mistake and wishes to join Canada so they can have a king,” Atwood says, “but it wouldn’t be the 51st state. It would be 10 new states and two territories, which would mean that the Republicans would never get elected again. So he’s welcome to try.”</p><p><a href="https://flip.it/hUgLDP" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">flip.it/hUgLDP</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/MargaretAtwood" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MargaretAtwood</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Memoir" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Memoir</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstodon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstodon</span></a></span> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Autobiography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Autobiography</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Canada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Canada</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/CanLit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CanLit</span></a></p>

Marc A. Godin<p>Last night at writing group we talked a little bit about social media (UGH!) and since this account (my writing account) is new, maybe I should share some of what I plan to do to grow this account here.</p><p>I'm of the opinion that with billionaires and fascists clogging up the internet, it's a good idea for us artist types and other ne'er-do-wells to keep a little corner of the web for ourselves, independent of Corporate-owned social media.</p><p>A few folks at writing group had a different experience with mastodon than I had, so here's what I've done to make my experience here more interesting, for folks who are new here:</p><p>1) Follow hashtags. You can do that here! I follow <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a>, <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/amwriting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>amwriting</span></a>, <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/canlit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>canlit</span></a> and a few others, which keep my timeline full while I pick and choose which accounts to follow</p><p>2) Use hashtags. I don't use very many, but they make you more visible to people who share your interests</p><p>3) Mastodon is for community, not necessarily for marketing. I get a lot of engagement here from a small number of mutuals. This brings benefits that are different from a large reach of mostly strangers. Marketing is important (I'm told), but so is community. Think about which you're trying to do when you're using social media.</p>

Jules Octavian<p>Greetings, loyal readers! County Fence Magazine is Eastern Ontario's oldest and most prestigious boundary and fencing publication. I, Jules Octavian, began this magazine out of a fascination with the boundaries of Eastern Ontario. Following my global circumnavigation aboard my beloved Atlanta there were few opportunities for a man of letters locally, so I endeavoured to make my own and County Fence was born. Thanks to some young friends of mine we're finally able to bring County Fence to a global audience via the World Wide Web.</p><p>We'll be posting a story for free accompanied by an audio version at 10:00 PM on the first and third Thursdays of the month for the next year and a half. Follow here or go to the website for other ways to subscribe.</p><p>www.countyfencemagazine.com</p><p><a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/CanCon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CanCon</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/CanLit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CanLit</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Canada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Canada</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Ontario" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ontario</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Eastern" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Eastern</span></a> Ontario <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Literature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Literature</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Bookstodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bookstodon</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Readers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Readers</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Writer</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Writer</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/indiepub" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>indiepub</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/indiebook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>indiebook</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/indieauthor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>indieauthor</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/fences" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fences</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/boundaries" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>boundaries</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Coffee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Coffee</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/Biography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Biography</span></a> <a href="https://universeodon.com/tags/introduction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>introduction</span></a></p>
