“In a drastic attempt to protect their beachfront homes, residents in Salisbury, Massachusetts, invested $500,000 in a sand dune to defend against encroaching tides. After being completed last week, the barrier made from 14,000 tons of sand lasted just 72 hours before it was completely washed away”

The Daily Beast · $500K Dune Designed to Protect Massachusetts Homes Last Just 3 DaysBy Dan Ladden-Hall

#BlueCliffs residents in Southland NZ face the likelihood their homes or huts will disappear into the sea soo. That's what #ClimateChange, #SeaLevelRise and #CoastalErosion will mean for many other areas near the sea too.

Friends in the Wairarapa used to have a holiday home 30M from the sea. By 2012 it was 5M from the sea. I don't know if it's still there. They were realistic about the loss as they had somewhere else to go.

Sad for those with nowhere else to go.

#ClimateDiary Massive waves hitting #California coast line, including #LosAngeles and #SantaCruz West Cliff Drive. Thinking of my conversation with Santa Cruz’s climate and sustainability officer this year and all the challenges for local authorities and residents that #ClimateChange and #CoastalErosion bring -big storms like these are only getting more frequent.

My #day26 map for the #30DayMapChallenge is more symbolic for the Minimal (less is more) theme. Plaquemines Parrish, Louisiana sits at the nexus of the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. Less coastal erosion and fewer saltwater intrusions will bring more ecosystem benefits. Map shows a false color infrared composite of a Landsat 9 scene texturized. Living vegetation is red and water is dark blue.

The heavy rains that have already dropped as much as 10 inches through Wednesday in some places could combine with king tides along #Florida’s southeast coast to further the flood threat.

#CoastalErosion is expected to continue as well with 6- to 9-foot large breaking waves, rough surf and wave runup to the dune line at high tide.

Power outages topped 110,000, mostly in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties as of 8:30 a.m."
