A no-nonsense reporter stumbling across the supernatural and, instead of freaking out, just shrugging and hitting the library? That's my kind of protagonist. He wasn't particularly bitter about the monsters, creatures, and critters he came across. To him, they were neither inherently good or evil. It was their actions that defined them. They were just often at the center of a good story. And Darren McGavin played him with such bombast and gusto that it was hard not to root for him. There have been novels and graphic novels for his further adventures, but he never caught on or received the recognition he deserved. And, yes, he inspired the X-Files.I've got both of these in a box somewhere.
