Beaded #Turtle & Beaded #Lizard Umbilical Pouches
On display at Santa Rosa Junior College Multicultural Museum (CA, USA)
“Umbilical pouches are created by Plains women when babies are born. The umbilical cord of the newborn is dried & then sewn into the pouch. The pouch may then be then hung on cradleboards or blankets as a protective amulet or hung on a tree to draw spirits away from the child. Lizards represent boys & turtles represent girls.”

Sand Lizard

I spotted, much to my delight, this beautifully coloured lizard in a woodpile in Poland. I’ve never come across this type of lizard before and they are quite large!

We watched each other for a while and I tried to remain as still as possible and non-threatening whilst I quietly captured a few photos.

If you really like this photo, you can order a print on-demand from Redbubble at the link below.
There are lots of options: prints, framed or not; canvas prints; postcards; and many more.

When I was done with the gardening I saw the three-legged water skink, along with a four legged companion, checking out the small blue plastic plate that I used to feed them 4 weeks ago. They clearly remembered that last time the big human made an awful racket in the yard dog food appeared on that blue plate afterwards, and so as soon as I sat down they came out of hiding to check the plate.

Not wanting to leave them disappointed I went inside to get them something, and returned with some canned superworms. The two of them made a feast of those, and even had a Lady & the Tramp moment when they both tried to eat the same one.

Hey there! Did you know that most social interactions among lizards 🦎 are between breeding individuals? It's pretty fascinating stuff! Territorial behavior is quite common, especially in species that use sit-and-wait hunting 🤺 strategies. Males typically set up and defend territories that attract females with key resources like basking spots ☀️, feeding areas 🐛, and nesting sites 🌳 while also offering protection from predators.

So, what's your favorite lizard 🦎? If you're not a fan of these scaly creatures, I'd love to know why! Personally, I find blue-tongued skinks super cool. And let's not forget about the mighty Komodo Dragons 🐉, they're just incredible!

This water dragon / goanna lived a happy well-fed life at the Chinese Friendship Garden in Darling Harbour, Sydney. It was very interested in my dumplings but I didn't want to share so it it lost interest in me. My photo from 2011.

Bestial Human Monitor Lizard
Hand drawn Ink art by William McAusland, writing by Corryn and W. McAusland
These lizard bestial humans have a tough time getting admitted into a human settlement, and unless arriving with known humans, cyborgs or mutant humans, will be turned away at gunpoint. Even when admitted entry, often with a bribe of 30+3d6sp slipped to the guards, the monitor lizard must remain confined to the unit’s quarters and will not be allowed into any saloon, store or eatery.
