Thousands in #Midwestern #GOP Districts Attend #Sanders' First Stops on Tour to Fight #Oligarchy

"It's like there's only one person who is actually able to sidestep the demoralization and frustration," said one observer.

Julia Conley, Feb 22, 2025

"After addressing more than 3,400 #Nebraska residents in Omaha Friday evening, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Saturday made his second stop on his National Tour to Fight Oligarchy—telling Iowa City, #Iowa residents that '#Trumpism will not be defeated by politicians inside the #DCBeltway.'

"'For better or worse, that is not going to happen,' said the Vermont Independent senator, whose broadly popular policy proposals have long been dismissed by Democratic leaders as unrealistic and radical while President Donald Trump has increasingly captured the attention of the #WorkingClass Americans who would benefit most from Sanders' ideas.

"'It will only be defeated by millions of Americans in Iowa, in #Vermont, in Nebraska, in every state in this country, who come together in a strong #grassroots movement and say no to oligarchy, no to #authoritarianism, no to #kleptocracy, no to massive cuts to programs that #LowIncome and working Americans desperately need, no to huge #TaxBreaks for the #wealthiest people in this country,' said Sanders.

"The senator announced his tour earlier this month as #ElonMusk, the head of the Trump-created Department of Government Efficiency ( #DOGE) who poured $277 million on the president's campaign, swept through numerous agencies, with DOGE staffers setting up illegal servers, seizing control of data, shutting federal employees out of offices, and working to shut down operations across the government.

"Since Trump took office for his second term just over a month ago, roughly 30,000 federal employees have been fired or laid off—part of Musk's push to cut $2 trillion in federal spending in order to fill the $4.6 trillion hole that Trump's extension of the 2017 tax cuts would blow in the deficit.

"#Republican lawmakers have also pushed to include cuts to #Medicaid, and Trump this week signaled he would back #Medicare cuts after repeatedly insisting he would not slash the popular healthcare program used by more than 65 million Americans, in order to save money while handing out tax cuts to the same #corporations and #ultrawealthy households that benefited from the 2017 tax law.

"'Today in America we are rapidly moving toward an #oligarchic form of society where a handful of #multibillionaires not only have extraordinary wealth, but unprecedented economic, media, and political power,' said Sanders in Iowa City, which like Omaha is represented by a Republican U.S. House member who narrowly won reelection last November and has faced pressure to reject the GOP budget plan. 'Brothers and sisters, that is not the democracy that men and women fought and died to defend.'"

There's a reason I point people to that link and gov.uk/universal-credit/what-y for the poors in general.

If you, Brit or fellow non-Brit stuck here sans a more accessible better option,
lost your job, then
what would the government deign you capable of living on?

Could you live on that?
What would you have to give up?

Who would you have to stop meeting?
How long could you live like that?

What else would you do with your time?
How will you pay for that?

How will you explain to the job centre staff why you chose to do that instead of Finding A Job, You Scrounger?

#TorontoPublicLibrary Recovers from #Ransomware Attack

by Matt Enis
Jan 17, 2024

"The Toronto Public #Library (#TPL) is in the final stages of recovering from a ransomware attack on October 28, 2023 that shut down the library’s internal network, website, and public computers. Although TPL managed to keep all of its 100 branches open and host programs throughout the ordeal, patrons were unable to access their library accounts online or use the library’s computers for more than two months. And while TPL has also continued to manually check out print books and other physical materials, the library has been unable to process holds or check the materials back in when they are returned.

“'We’ve got 12 53-foot tractor trailers filled with returns—well over a million items,' Toronto’s City Librarian Vickery Bowles told LJ in early January. 'Ransomware is becoming so pervasive, and it’s affecting organizations dedicated to community well-being such as hospitals, schools, and libraries, of course. I really feel that #PublicSector organizations are becoming targets.”

"According to the '2023 Palo Alto Networks Canada Ransomware Barometer' report, which includes analysis of a survey of IT professionals conducted by Angus Reid Group, 35 percent of Canadian businesses with at least 100 employees were hit by ransomware attacks during the past year. Fifty-eight percent of those businesses needed more than a month to recover from an attack, while 24 percent took longer than four months. The report notes that cyber criminals appear to be targeting manufacturing businesses 'significantly more' than other types of Canadian businesses and institutions, but “today’s threat actors do not discriminate against specific industries.” In fact, the #BritishLibrary was hit with a separate ransomware attack on the same day as TPL last fall, the #LondonPublicLibrary in #Ontario was attacked in December, and the #TorontoZoo was attacked earlier this month.

“'In the case of #PublicLibraries, I think [#CyberAttacks] are particularly troublesome, because we’re dedicated to equality and access to information and intellectual freedom and openness to all,' Bowles said, adding that this attack has impacted people throughout the community, especially patrons who rely on TPL for access to public computers and other technology. 'I think this represents an attack on the very essence of civil society. That's what I think is really troubling about all this—when I hear about the impact this is having on people like students, #lowincome communities, youth, #jobseekers, [people] who don’t have any other resources other than what the library can offer. It’s just heartbreaking.'"

#SNIWWOC #FoodProject: Your food, your choice.

According to Statistics Canada (Dec 2020), approximately one in seven Canadians (14.6%) were living in a food-insecure household in May 2020. #FoodInsecurity is also a cause associated with poorer nutrition as well as a variety of physical and mental health issues.

SNIWWOC is providing a #FoodSecurity program for #LowIncome #RacializedWomen including #transgender and #TwoSpirit community members. This program is intended to offset costs of monthly #groceries, not to cover all costs.

Eligible clients will receive the decided amount of gift cards to one of the grocery stores. We are committed to supporting vulnerable women in our community, such as single mothers and newcomers who are sometimes isolated.

ELIGIBILITY
1. Women Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour, including transgender, non-binary and two-spirit community members who are 18 years old or above;

2. Must make less than the low-income cut-off line (submit the proof of income)* see the table on website.

3. Resident of Greater Victoria BC, Canada.

#SCOTUS allows #HHS to divert funds over #abortion referrals

The #SupremeCourt Tues cleared the way for the #Biden admin to strip millions of #HealthCare dollars from #Oklahoma over its refusal to direct patients to info about #abortions — a federal req that the state says would be at odds w/its strict #AbortionBan.

Last yr, the Biden admin diverted $4.5M from OK’s #FamilyPlanning prgm, which primarily serves #LowIncome or #uninsured patients.
