Mud season is upon us, spring looks to be fully on now, and lower elevation snow is melting fast. Bad mud some sections on our Beartooth Front hike today 1900-2100m. A few Pasques survived snow yest. Our Red Lodge (pop. 3500) Hands Off demo today downtown had over 100 people in it, and only 3 adverse incidents. MAGAts in their big trucks w outsize wheels, always easy to tell when trouble is coming. One even "rolled coal"! Mostly friendly honks/waves 👍. #montana #hiking #justice #dogs #HandsOff

the driver of this truck sped thru while flipping us off. Large truck with outsize wheels, go figure. In the past, I have given pinky wiggles when these have behaved rudely in traffic, but no more, decided not to risk getting shot.

such a beautiful day for it, cool SE wind, spring sun, 5C. Red Lodge is a tiny blue dot in the MT MAGAt sea. Missoula is the most progressive of our cities. Billings, don't ask. 🤮
that mud. my boots were quite heavy in here. big snowdrifts here two weeks ago.
still some nice drifts around here and there

Not a real heavy producer, this last winter system, for quite a while. Only 10cm our place, not even half that in Lakefork Canyon behind town. Was barely able to ski the road 2100-2250m then back. Had to take skis off twice thin spots. But -3C w lite up-canyon breeze felt great in strong sun. Sheltered parts had 20cm + base still 👍. So. Much. the Lake Fork of Rock Creek is much more open 2100-2250m
love it when they can get going, doing their tussling while speeding downhill
very much in favor of -3C but wish there had been more powder in here.

loved these sheltered areas, great glide and fun.
only 10cm our place this morning. better than nada.
the rocks 3000-3200m on the Beartooth Plateau show the lite new powder.

Weather window today in advance of next winter system. Already starting to snow in town. Nice this morning hiking on Beartooth Highway from the closure, up to 2nd switchback. 2300-2500m then back. 1C or so, just lite W wind. Still good snowpack on the sides, but the road is not skiable, even the margins. Spring plowing up to the 3335m Beartooth Pass has begun, opening should be 23MAY 👍. We never miss that. never tire of that view up Rock Creek Canyon from 2450m. it goes SW here, then makes a turn to the NW way back there.
Pasques out near the Palisades Connector trail yest. 1950m, warmest SW facing slope. over spring and summer the colors move up in elev. These and a yellow variety bloom Aug-mid Sept. on the the plateaus 3200m +
a few small cornices up there 3200m.
tho I miss our mid Oct-May hikes/skis on the road, getting up above 3100m easily the rest of the year is one of our fav. things here. would live up there if we could ❄️

windswept here. it never ceases to amaze me that US - 212 here gets above the very highest part of this part of the Beartooth Plateau visible, to 3335m Beartooth Pass. and built 1933-36 with during the very short summer windows.
you can see where the deeper wind-sheltered areas have been plowed.
