I never saw this picture of #SallyRide and #KathrynSullivan synchronising their watches before the lift-off of STS-41-G. Christina Koch shared it on her Instagram and I absolutely loved it. It wasn't uploaded to Commons so I did it
#LGBTQ+ People in the #Space Industry
…"Although there have been over 600 people in space, there has never been an openly LGBTQ+ #astronaut … it's important for us to examine the industry's historical treatment of LGBTQ+ people, and to think about how we as an industry are going to change going forward"…

I was 13 and I wanted to be an astronaut. Unfortunately that never did come to pass. Miss you, Sally. You were magnificent.

>On June 18, 1983, space shuttle Challenger lifted off on its second journey to space, the STS-7 mission. Among its five-person crew, Challenger carried the first American woman into space, NASA astronaut Sally K. Ride.
There's an under-reported detail that I noticed while reading about the late #SallyRide on Wikipedia, on this 40th anniversary of her spaceflight.
Sally seems to has a sister named Bear.
Presumably she was called Bear Ride for some part of her life which is pretty cool.

I'm planning a STEM unit for my 5th graders. Pairs of students are going to launch a payload of mini figs into orbit using seltzer rockets. Appropriate that the figs are famous people involved in space. #nasa #space #MargaretHamilton #NancyGRoman #MaeJemison #SallyRide #STEM
