Weiter Grippalen Infekt. @bookstodon

"As it is not our intention to give a flattering picture of anyone.."

Indeed. Julien's extreme FOMO, his sense of alienation & exclusion, his feelings dominated by "a stinging sense of his poverty & low estate in the eyes of the world," his desire to rise above his origins & conquer society, his lofty disdain & seething contempt..bodes ill.

Personally, thanks to FOBI (Fear Of Being Included), I'm happier on the fringes. Guess it ends badly either way.

#AmReading SCARLET AND BLACK by #Stendhal

"'Is this all love is?' Julien Sorel asked himself."

All it took was this little quote from #Stendhal in the María Gainza novel I just finished and I have decided to ignore my towering piles of unread books and instead reread SCARLET AND BLACK (1830), more commonly translated as THE RED AND THE BLACK.

Intrigued but unfazed by translator Margaret Shaw's "eccentric" (?) choice of "scarlet" for the title. Something I didn't question on my first read many years ago.

#Stendhal is an #opensource 2d #MMORPG that's been running for ... a while now, 20+ years probably. Originally in Java but now with a web port, it has quirks and is a bit clunky / programmer-y, but I found it charming to play. There's a bit of kitchen-sink / overgrown playground design on top of a basic 2d tile engine ("Arianne"). I like that you can get silly with the character customization. The sound design is best described as "incredibly chaotic".

To interact with the NPCs you type at them in the regular chat box, so it acts a little bit like having a conversation. It's helped by good dialogue though - I like the writing a lot! Definitely will poke around at this one a bit more to see what's in it. I adopted a sheep that follows me around and eats berries, and there seems to be panning for gold somewhere... along with the requisite rat killing quest fare.

@AAKL

It is not free libre software and it is not libre gaming (software+creative assets). But thanks to your post I looked up some alternatives.

Personally I would rather read reviews/news about games like stendhal, isleward, nethack, Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead.

I want to play one of these while listening to podcasts.

I want to see humanity moving in a more libre direction. We can and should still have fun and explore creative ways of having fun (with and without computing).

3 things I read & really liked this past week from a trio of great fiction writers with new work posted to the internet:

• Jessi Jezewska Stevens's latest from her substack on the midterm elections and #Stendhal

• Susan Daitch in Berfrois on the Gowanus Canal
