Hehe, because of the post before - now #PinkFloyd content :-)
#TheDarkSideoftheMoon is the eighth studio album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on 1 March 1973 by #CapitolRecords in the US and on 16 March 1973 by Harvest Records in the UK. Developed during live performances before recording began, it was conceived as a concept album that would focus on the pressures faced by the band during their arduous lifestyle, and also deal with the mental health problems of the former band member #SydBarrett, who had departed the group in 1968. New material was recorded in two sessions in 1972 and 1973 at EMI Studios (now Abbey Road Studios) in London.

Opel is the third album of new material by former Pink Floyd frontman Syd Barrett. Released on October 17, 1988, the album is a collection of previously unreleased material and alternate takes recorded during Barrett’s solo sessions in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It offers a fascinating glimpse into his creative process and the raw, unfiltered artistry that defined his post-Floyd years.

Opel was compiled and released nearly two decades later to highlight some of these hidden gems and provide fans with insight into Barrett’s unique artistry. The album includes outtakes, alternative versions, and songs that didn’t make it onto his earlier albums.

By the way, is it a cover if Syd Barrett wrote it for Pink Floyd, his youth friends David and Richard play it (Richard actually played the keyboards in the original 1967 recording), and his fan David Bowie sings it?

Is there a name for a cover that's so intimately close to the original that it can't really be called a cover? It's almost not a version either, it's as close to the original it could be 40 years later.

I’m a fan of these “Side By Side” singles, & I saw this in a used 7” bin today & snagged it.

As a fan of this song, & both artists, I greatly appreciate the differences between the two; preferring the more elegant, piano driven R.E.M. version. One of maybe less than a dozen or so covers that I prefer to the original.
Syd’s is also great, but R.E.M gives it a different kind of beauty.

Almost There

It’s 2:15pm. Lunch is about to end (I started my break a little later than normal today). I have a vacation day booked for tomorrow, then the following two days are off for Thanksgiving, then the weekend. That’s right, folks. I have a five day weekend coming and it is just a bit more than three hours away. I have one more meeting on my schedule this afternoon and I have a few email threads that need updating. Other than that, we’re just riding out this fine Tuesday in the office.

So before Covid shut everything down I was a regular user of Audible, the audiobook subscription service. I forget how but at some point I came into a whole bunch of credits and blew them all on a number of books that I never got around to listening to. Back in March when my company upped our in-the-office requirement from once a week to twice a week I reopened my account and all of those unread books were still there. One was a biography of Syd Barrett. I’m listening to it now and while many of the events and facts the author describes are clearly incorrect, and many others are trying to show Barrett as some poetic legend on a level that is infinitely greater than his catalog demonstrates, it is a good read. I have been listening to a lot of his music over the last week.

The National Solo Album Month (nasoalmo) rules allow for one cover song. While adding another song does not fit my personal theme for this month’s project, I am wondering if I should record a cover of Dominoes. I’m thinking about it.

PINK FLOYD
Relics
2018 Europe Reissue

First post on the new server, last spin of the night!

I’ve spent the last two hours trying to figure out how to migrate (I’m technologically stunted), so it’s finally time for music.

I’ve always loved Relics for the classic staples; Arnold Layne, Interstellar Overdrive, See Emily Play & Bike.

However, it’s also got “Biding My Time” on it, which is also a criminally underrated masterpiece.
