Kenneth M Sweeney<p>And like <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/TheExpanse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TheExpanse</span></a>, it could embrace the politics of place: <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Earth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Earth</span></a> as old and comfortable, <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Mars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mars</span></a> as ambitious and proud, <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Titan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Titan</span></a> as isolated and distrustful, and so on. No starships required—just patrol cutters, orbital transport, and tense interrogations in low-g corridors. 3)</p>

Lydia Conwell :mastodon:<p>So my next question about the <a href="https://todon.nl/tags/TheExpanse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TheExpanse</span></a> and <a href="https://todon.nl/tags/physics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>physics</span></a> is:</p><p>Is thrust even possible in space? Is it possible for a ship to speed up and slow down?</p>
Lydia Conwell :mastodon:<p><a href="https://todon.nl/tags/TheExpanse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TheExpanse</span></a> </p><p>I don't know about the books but the story threads in the TV series are pretty sloppy.</p><p>There are a few random storylines that literally go nowhere. In season 6 it's a storyline about some alien necromancer dogs.</p><p>And one series has the finale half way through, then continues with obviously the beginning of the next book. I guess that was something to do with the series being cancelled or something.</p><p>It's an odd series because it's pretty good but just so very sloppy at times.</p>
Lydia Conwell :mastodon:<p><a href="https://todon.nl/tags/TheExpanse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TheExpanse</span></a> </p><p>OK, so the gravity on the ships comes from thrust.</p><p>I'm not no physicist or anything but wouldn't that mean to maintain constant gravity the ship would have to be continually accelerating?</p><p>If so, that doesn't seem particularly plausible to me.</p><p><a href="https://todon.nl/tags/Scifi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Scifi</span></a></p>

Lydia Conwell :mastodon:<p><a href="https://todon.nl/tags/TheExpanse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TheExpanse</span></a> season 5</p><p>The bit where Naomi jumps into space and her eyes start going all popping out and she goes all red and injects herself to stay alive ...</p><p>It's a bit daft, isn't it?</p><p>The show - which supposedly does space correctly - loves people hurtling themselves into space.</p><p>It's a bit too James Bond for my liking. The chances of success in those situations are so slim. It's just a bit too unbelievable for my liking.</p><p>I have my limits, dammit!</p><p>Maybe one episode they'll do that space hurtling thing but do it on a motorbike that will land in a helicopter or something.</p><p>Also, one thing I don't get. The ships don't have artificial gravity, right? But sometimes it looks like they do have artificial gravity.</p><p>And when they definitely don't have artificial gravity, they don't look like their in zero G. They'd have their arms floating all over the place. There's no gravity, you don't need them to fall by your side. In fact, it might take more effort to hold them by your side.</p><p><a href="https://todon.nl/tags/Scifi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Scifi</span></a> <a href="https://todon.nl/tags/TV" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TV</span></a></p>
