🌎 Roseate spoonbill (Platalea ajaja)

The roseate spoonbill is a striking wading bird, easily identified by its vibrant pink plumage and distinctive spoon-shaped bill. Adults have a bare greenish head, and their pink colouration comes from their diet. They inhabit shallow fresh and coastal waters, ranging from the southeastern U.S. to central Argentina. They feed by sweeping their bills side-to-side in the water, catching small fish, crustaceans, and insects. Often seen in groups, they are social birds. No subspecies are recognised.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

🌎 Southern lapwing (Vanellus chilensis)

The Southern lapwing is a striking crested wader with a greyish-brown back and head, black and white face markings, and a black breast band. It has a thin black crest and pinkish legs. Found throughout most of South America, and recently extended its range into southern Central America, it favors open grasslands and wetlands. Known for its loud, piercing calls, it's a territorial bird, aggressively defending its nest and young. Red wing spurs are used for this purpose. Four subspecies are recognised.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

🌍 Northern bald ibis (Geronticus eremita)

The northern bald ibis, hermit ibis, or Waldrapp is an endangered, migratory Old World ibis with only around 700 remaining in the wild, primarily in Morocco. It has glossy black plumage, a bald head and face, and a long, curved red bill. These social birds nest in colonies on cliffs and forage in flocks. They feed on insects, small reptiles, and amphibians, using their long bill to probe the ground.

Conservation status: Endangered (IUCN 3.1)

🌍 Black-headed heron (Ardea melanocephala)

Black-headed herons are large birds with a slender build, long neck, and legs. Their most striking feature is their dark, almost black heads, contrasting with a white throat and a grey body. They have a long, pointed beak and yellow eyes. They typically stalk shallow water, using their long legs to wade through mud and vegetation. Black-headed herons are primarily fish-eaters, but they also consume insects, amphibians, and small reptiles.

@RickiTarr @theropologist when I lived in Central Florida, these birds ruled the neighborhood. They would literally stop traffic then just stand there as if to dare you to try and drive around them. The photo was on my neighbor’s back patio. #sandhillcranes #wadingbirds #wildlife

Sanderlings are small wading birds whose name derives from Old English sand-yrðling, "sand-ploughman", a name likely given to them because of their peculiar feeding behaviour, which involves chasing waves to find plankton and detritus that's carried in with each wave.

Great Egret mid-stride.

A large, pure-white bird with very long neck curved in a reverse "S" shape, the egret is seen standing on one thin dark leg, the other leg is raised showing a very large claw-shaped foot, in shallow waters. The bird's dagger-like beak is orange and a bright green patch of coloring is seen beneath its eye. A few spiky rust-colored tail feathers point downward.
