Finished a rundown of the differences between Zak McKracken's Commodore 64 and DOS V1 versions. To make this I actually played both versions side by side on the same PC, one in DOSbox and the other in the VICE C64 emulator.

I realized recently that the FM Towns version of Zak McKracken makes it so the first room you enter in the Mayan temple in Mexico always has a torch already burning.

(More technically, the game has the torches already lit in each room of the outer ring of the temple maze.)

The FM Towns port also lit up the entire Mars maze, so you no longer need the flashlight for it.

@danielalbu After some more testing, I found this bug is present in both the Commodore 64 and DOS V1 versions. But it was fixed in the enhanced DOS V2 & the FM Towns versions (and presumably the Atari & Amiga releases too)!

Also, in DOS V2, when you're outside the Mayan pyramid as Annie, her tiny sprite uses Zak's sprite instead for some reason. This error isn't present in the C64/DOS V1 versions, or in the FM Towns release.

Something I never knew till now: besides showing Zak's shirt in two different blue hues, early Zak McKracken screenshots have an extra blank line between the background art and the GUI, which is all the way down at the bottom of the screen!

The C64 and DOS V1 versions of Zak as published had the GUI basically right below the backgrounds, with the black line shunted to the bottom of the screen.

Zak McKracken shenanigans happened and it was a heck of a lot of fun ❤️

Big thanks to Matthew and
@DavidBFox for the time, the smiles, and all the cool stuff we continue to learn about the game. And of course to @danielalbu for making these one of a kind moments happen 😊
