Sir Rochard 'Dock' BunsonThere are two main reasons that accepting to be my sponsor might have been awkward for Dave. 1. He was ~10 years sober, but currently not huge into the AA program. The only reason that he was at that particular meeting was bringing an ex-SIL that was drinking herself to death. 2. The bigger one that I did not know at the time was that Dave was a trans man. Atlanta is a fairly progressive place, but I still have my Tennessee accent. I think about how nervous he must've been to tell me, even though he waited long enough to make sure that I wasn't a complete bigot. I was suprised, as it hadn't occured to me that that's what he wanted to talk about. It was...different. there was a format to the meeting, that I didn't understand, and it was all strange. I didn't really connect with anyone until near the end of the meeting when Dave shared. He had a peace about him that some of the gruffer characters in there didn't seem to. I went up to him after the meeting we talked & before leaving I blurted out "Would like to be my sponsor?" I would find out later that this was awkard for Dave for a couple different reasons, but to his credit, I didn't pick up on it that day. Sir Rochard 'Dock' BunsonOne of the reasons that I have hesitated to tell this story is that involved me quitting drinking alcohol & I hate coming off as preaching abstinence. I'm not. This is just something I had to do for myself.I needed to stop drinking alcohol, tried to control it on my own & my wife was ready to leave me. I can say with near certainty that if I had continued, I wouldn't have the amazing girls that I'm trying to protect. I wouldn't have anything worth protecting, even if I was still alive. I wasn't drinking every morning and needing rehab, but I had to stop.
