Johann Sebastian Bach and the devil

Those who know me are aware that I don’t believe in a righteous God, at least not one who can be approached. There is no a priori rule, no Great Other to whom you can turn when you don’t know what to do. The world is satanic, the only authority is yourself, the only rule is “Do as you will”.

Now, the world would be terrible if it were just like that, arbitrary and brutal. Throughout the history of humanity, it has been clear that in the infinite, Dionysian chaos, there is an order hidden, something Apollonian, that is always there. There is a harmony to the world. Only in this way can the world exist.

This harmony can be understood as divine (even if it should not be confused with God). Music is the expression of harmony. Harmony follows precise rules and these rules actually lie before human knowledge. What a person perceives as harmonious is laid out. All people feel the same. The birds chirp strictly according to the theory of harmony. Only warning and distress calls are disharmonious.

That is why music follows strict rules. These have their basis in the theory of harmony. Only make music a lot more, otherwise it would simply be mathematics. It breaks the harmony. It unites the Dionysian and the Apollonian principle. That sounds like Nietzsche? Nietzsche is the philosopher of music. Kant, Hegel to Marx stand for reason. For the totality of reason - music breaks that fortunately.

J.S. Bach wanted to make music in honor of God. He kept exactly the harmony and thus justified this as a modern science. He avoided the tritone, diabolus in musica, the “devil’s interval” and how dull the world would be if everyone just followed Bach and how unmusical it would be if they didn’t!

All art and all music arises precisely in this field of tension. Between right and wrong. Between satanic and divine. Between Apollo and Dionysius! And if one side wins, we are lost.
