Another fabulous bumblebee scarab beetle, again inside a poppy flower in our back garden. I think this might be another Pygopleurus species, P veridisuturatus, but I’m going entirely on the colours in iNaturalist photos without knowing what I could be mixing it up with, so that may be ENTIRELY wrong. #beetles #insects #MacroPhotography

I’m having a *terrible* time trying to get photographs of these little suckers: they’re skittish in the sunlight, they fly fast, and I keep missing the focus with all that fuzz. It occurred to me to wonder if I could find any sleeping, which hopefully would be more accommodating subjects. #beetles
Another question on #beetles (behaviour+ecology) looking for an expert. We get bumblebee scarabs here in north Greece, the delightfully fuzzy Pygopleurus vulpes. During the day they come to our lawn flowers: I’m wondering what they’re likely to be doing during the night. Night flying seems unlikely, especially given the temperature, but do they return to fixed nest sites? Burrow? Just crash wherever they find themselves? Solitary or gathered in groups? #insectodon #insects
Any experts on #beetles (behaviour+ecology) here to answer a couple of questions? We get oil beetles (Meloe) here in north Greece but last year I saw none at all over the period I would expect them to mate and lay eggs. I’m wondering if one bad breeding year is likely to wipe them out locally, or if there will be adults overwintering from previous years who can pick things up. #insectodon #insects

I recently finished "An Affair with Africa" by Alzada Kistner and am now absolutely fascinated by the beetle species that hang out in ant colonies, only appearing above ground when their hosts go out on raiding forays or when the nest is relocating.
