🌼This weekend (10-14 april) is the Dutch National bee count, where citizens are encouraged to count bees, wasps and hoverflies in their garden or neighbourhood. Knowledge of bee population is important because 80% of edible crops and almost 90% of wild plants are pollinated by bees and other insects. In the Netherlands 34 bee species have already disappeared and half of the 360 species are endangered.

This was my fourth time participating and this year we counted more wasps, hoverflies and bumblebees, but no other types of bees. I wonder if the drier weather was of influence 🐝🌼

Another book I finished in March for the Middle Earth Road Trip Readathon: "In Name of the Queen" by artist Nicolette Berendsen from https://hoofdkantoorbijzaken.com/ . This Dutch non-fiction book combines an ABC of facts about bees with beautiful collages. The writing is humorous and although I mostly picked this up because of the illustrations, I also learned a thing or two about bees!🐝

Het is alweer druk bij het #BijenHotel. Heb je er een waar *nooit* bijen in zitten? check dan:
- zijn de buisjes 1-8 mm groot? Groter wordt niet gebruikt. Zie de 2e foto.
- zijn de buisjes lang genoeg?
De #Bijen maken aan de voorkant eerst een lege cel, om #Spechten te foppen. Daarna een cel voor een zoon, daarna pas cellen voor de waardevolle dochters. Tien cm diep of dieper wordt daarom erg gewaardeerd, minder dan 7 cm is onbruikbaar.
