Slept in and stayed local. Still got about 10k steps in visiting the Roscommon museum, a Dominican priory from the 1250's, sat and watched little horses graze and made a second trip out to Roscommon castle to see it in better light.

I am in the town of Castlebar for the night. The bar part does not refer to any of the town's many fine drinking establishments. It's a reference to the de Barry family castle which was the 13th century nexus for development in the area. Today, Castlebar is the county seat for Mayo. The castle itself is long gone, so nothing for me to look at, but the name lingers on. I visited several other de Barry associated castles earlier in this trip, including Barryscourt.

Hiorns Tower
I have now been to multiple castles with individuals tied to them whose name means something like "So-and-so of the Battle-Axe."

The world seems particularly crap atm, so I'm going to try and see a particularly cool castle today. No, it won't make the world less crap and it isn't doing a good job of distracting me from that fact, but at least at the end of the day I'll have seen a cool castle and gotten to share it with you all in some small way. Hope that is making your lives a bit less crap.
Oh, on the subject of crap, should I put together a gallery of garderobes, crap chutes and cesspits I've visited?

Some telephoto shots of the carved stonework on Lynch's Castle in Galway.
Going through my snaps taken out the bus window and pretty sure I found the stump of the other Muckinish tower which causes so much confusion in the historical record. It's only .38 miles away from the Shanmuckinish (West) tower I visited according to Google Earth.
Now ensconced in my hotel a few blocks off Eyre Square. Did 15.5k steps today, most with my full pack. Ouch. Walked through Galway a bit after dropping my pack off and cleaning up a bit. Picked up some groceries. While walking, I passed Lynch's Castle. It's a very fine and heavily ornamented example of an urban tower house. It was built in the late 1500's by the Lynch family, one of the most powerful of the 14 families which controlled medieval Galway. These days, it's a bank branch.
Good day, but very hard on my body carrying my pack around all day.
Visited Dunguaire and Oranmore castles. Here is Dunguaire:
The Irish name for the first means "Fort of Guaire." King Guaire of Connacht supposedly had a residence here in the 7th century.

Okehampton Castle, Devon
Motte and bailey castle built 1068-1086 by Baldwin FitzGilbert after local revolt against Norman rule. Converted into a residence in C14 by Hugh Courtenay, Earl of Devon, much of whose work survives, including great hall, bedrooms, kitchens and a chapel.
Japan was rumored to be the home of tens of thousands of castles under the Tokugawa shogunate (1603-1868). In this era, over 3,000 castles blossomed nationwide, tactically crafted to shield the ruling family from potential uprisings by feudal lords (daimyo).

! Thank goodness for this article—otherwise, we'd struggle to connect the dots between #medieval #fantasy and pixelated sword fights.

That grey one from before? First casting filled with bubbles. Second casting had a raised top face (sanding and polishing it smooth removed most of the 20 number). So that's a failure, but at least I have a mold and I can try again!
My 2019/20 book on lifestyles at Swedish Medieval castles is popular with non-professionals. It's free.
