Zu sehen ist ein unruhiges, stürmisches Meer. Wellen kommen aus allen Richtungen. Von untern schwappen zwei große Wellen in das Zentrum des Reliefs. Im Zentrum eine Forelle im Kampf mit den Wellen. Die vordere Hälfte des Fisches ist sichtbar, die Haltung ähnelt der von Delfinen. Auf ihrem Rücken hält sie verzweifelt mit ihren Flossen einen Fetzen Fell.

A restless, stormy sea can be seen. Waves are coming from all directions. Two large waves slosh into the centre of the relief from below. In the centre is a trout fighting the waves. The front half of the fish is visible, its posture resembling that of a dolphin. On its back it desperately holds a shred of fur with its fins.

From time to time I fiddle around with certain ideas, and I came back to this one last week--squared with super-deep grooves! One thing I have learned is that a squared rim looks difficult to drink from, so that I make round as usual, although it is a four sided cup. #ceramics #clay #pottery #art #mastoart

I finally got around to converting one of my favorite clay samples into a decorating slip. This was an epic find, on the shores of #CapeCod in the summer of 2023, one of the most beautiful deposits of #WildClay I’ve seen: A small fresh water spring carrying #clay down a cliff onto the beach sand below.

I made a small cup with the unprocessed clay and at cone 5, it turned out to be self-glazing. The ocean salt and iron (both fluxes) encourage this effect. More in the #alttext.

It is dark brown in color and has a soft, vitreous sheen. On its left, a test tile painted with terra sigillata (decorating slip) made from the exact same clay. In its refined form, the clay gives a slightly brighter, iron-red tone with a smooth, satin sheen. In front of these two items is the original clay sample, gray and sandy.

I predicted, based on the results of the fired cup, that the terra sigillata would be a glassy, brown glaze. But in fact, the result I did get is quite common and similar to other clays I’ve tested. Nevertheless, it’s a gorgeous surface that I never get tired of.

The transformation from gray to red is always interesting to me. I’ve gotten this result several times with clays from New Mexico and Florida as well. It’s a sign that iron is present in the raw clay in a reduced form and then becomes oxided during firing (think rust) bringing out the reddish tone.
