For a few years now, after eating a papaya, I would throw the seeds outside in my yard so I can eventually have my own papaya fruit and trees (advise from my aunt).

For the first time this year I have trees and fruit. I was going to eat my first homegrown #papaya this morning, however it looks like the fruit bats got to it first.

It's okay, I was planning to share with the bats and birds.

The 2023–24 season for Australia's flying-foxes has been a devastating one – for reasons that largely remain a mystery to researchers, thousands of bat babies (also known as pups) have been left orphaned.

We live under the flight path of wildlife traveling between native forests in #CoastalNSW. At midsummer, these creatures are all very busy feeding on, pollinating, propagating (through excreting seeds), and regenerating not only the great native forests, but many private gardens.

Midsummer Visitors #1 Flying-Fox, (suborder Yinpterochiroptera) a genus of megabats (also known as fruit bats) are the largest members of the bat family. They are nomadic mammals that travel across large areas of Australia, feeding on native blossoms and fruits, spreading seeds and pollinating native plants. They feed mainly at night on nectar, pollen and fruit and will also feed on flowering and fruiting plants in gardens and orchards. They are vital to the health and regeneration of Australian native forests because they can transport pollen over vast distances and are also able to disperse larger seeds. Flying-fox mothers typically give birth to one baby every year. Newborns are entirely dependent on their mothers in the first few months of life. They cling to her when she flies out from camp to feed at night. Of the tree flying-fox species found in NSW (Black, Little Red and Grey-headed), the Grey-headed flying-fox is the most vulnerable species because it competes with humans for prime coastal habitat along the south-east Queensland, NSW and Victorian coasts. A young brownish flying fox hangs upside down feeding on nectar amongst the yellow fluffy flowers of a gum tree in summer bloom.
Festive Midsummer Resident #2 Native Frangipani (Hymenosporum flavum), a rainforest tree native to New South Wales, Queensland and New Guinea. Their highly fragrant flowers (similar to plumeria) attract native birds, bees and butterflies. A cluster of five-petalled native frangipani blossoms, shades ranging from creamy white to yellow to pale orange, are seen against a green leafy background.
Midsummer Visitors #3 The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) is a large white parrot. It has a dark grey-black bill, a distinctive sulphur-yellow crest and a yellow wash on the underside of the wings. Sexes are similar, although the female can be separated at close range by its red-brown eye (darker brown in the male). This is a noisy and conspicuous cockatoo, both at rest and in flight. They feed on Berries, seeds, nuts, and fruit, and live long lives of between 40 – 100 years. An adult cockatoo with wings outstretched feeds a younger family member as they perch together on the mottled grey trunk of a gum tree.
