It was our last early morning in Göreme, Turkey, and the intense colors continued to captivate us.

Arrived in Capadocia. With all its rock formations and caves, Göreme is truly a unique place.

A cobblestone street winds through the ancient cave dwellings of Göreme, Turkey, at dusk. The soft glow of lights illuminates the unique rock formations and the inviting path.

Some large triangular shaped geological structures with small windows in them lightly dusted with snow. The snow on the surrounding ground is thicker. These natural stone dwellings are the famous cave houses of Goreme, and most are still occupied, although many were tourist rentals. I took this photo in March 2009.

The view overlooks a town of stone buildings with many pale red tiled roofs.

Among the buildings are a number of tall rock formations, many storeys high. Carved high into some of the formations are windows. A single minaret scrapes the sky above them.

In the distance the horizon is dominated by mesas, with undulating multi-coloured sides of reds and whites.

The sky is blue with clouds.

A street-level view.

The entire left of the frame, from ground to sky, is filled with one of the tall rock formations. It can be seen to consist of multiple distinct layers of sediment, sometimes smooth, sometimes lined, sometimes pock-marked; although the light makes it hard to tell, there are variations in colour between the layers. The right of the frame is a single-story house, dwarfed by the rock formation on the left. A street runs between the two.

The pre-dawn sky is a pale grey-purple, with a glow on the horizon (a bit bloomed out here in this image). Hanging in the sky are two hot air balloons - one aglow with flame as it heats the air trapped inside.

Down the street, on the horizon behind a leafless tree, is a minaret, silhouetted against the glow of the coming dawn.

Nach und nach ist auch etwas Zeit,die Reisebilder zu entwickeln. Kapadokien ist wunderbar. Allerdings mittlerweile im Herbst ziemlich voll. An diesem Morgen musste ich früh auf dem Berg stehen, noch bevor der Muezzin rief. Nicht gerade meine Zeit. Aber es hat sich gelohnt. Es ist ein besonderes Schauspiel wenn Zahllose Ballons über der bizarren Landschaft starten.
