Sometimes, when working on a larger piece, I pause for a bit and just make something else, like a random bead, pendant, or sculpture. This is a large, thick pendant bead with a core of fire engine red opaque glass, and marbling in other opaque colors, including teal, orange, grey, beige and yellow. Something simple for Sunday. I used transparent emerald green glass to make these beads, then added a thick thread of opaque pale green for contrast. The punched out brass discs beneath I heated, then allowed to develop a natural patina over several months outdoors. The ear wires are pure copper. I just finished reading The Glassmaker by Tracy Chevalier. I like when you can learn from a book -- between the lines is a history of Murano glassmaking, especially lampwork beads

I really enjoyed looking up the types of beads the main character encounters and creates, from rosetta to ulivetta to cornaline d'aleppo.

It makes me want to do a little more reading about their history and learn about the legacy of Murano glass and the artisans working in the tradition today.

I used 2 types of colored mica fused to shades of transparent glass while in the torch flame to make the beads for this necklace, inspired by the iridescence one finds on ancient and other historic glass. I used canes of green, rose and blue glass with encased strands of opaque white to make the beads for this 18-inch necklace. The white strands give the beads a sense of movement.
