"The study, led by researchers at Brown University, found that the wealthiest Americans lived shorter lives than the wealthiest Europeans. In fact, wealthy Northern and Western Europeans had death rates 35 percent lower than the wealthiest Americans, whose lifespans were more like the poorest in Northern and Western Europe—which includes countries such as France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

"The findings are a stark reminder that even the wealthiest Americans are not shielded from the systemic issues in the US contributing to lower life expectancy, such as economic inequality or risk factors like stress, diet or environmental hazards," lead study author Irene Papanicolas, a professor of health services, policy and practice at Brown, said in a news release.

The study looked at health and wealth data of more than 73,000 adults across the US and Europe who were 50 to 85 years old in 2010. There were more than 19,000 from the US, nearly 27,000 from Northern and Western Europe, nearly 19,000 from Eastern Europe, and nearly 9,000 from Southern Europe. For each region, participants were divided into wealth quartiles, with the first being the poorest and the fourth being the richest. The researchers then followed participants until 2022, tracking deaths."

We’re all living longer, but Mediterraneans live longest in EU.

Life expectancy in the European Union has risen to its highest level ever recorded, according to figures released by Eurostat.

However, the figures show a stark divide, as most people born west of the former Iron Curtain can expect to live more than 80 years, while some regions on the eastern edge of the bloc lag behind with life expectancies of around 75 years.

Just putting this out there. I'm doing ok, despite the current situation we have in the US., but I have moments throughout the day where it's just overwhelming.

I've disconnected from social media and news in general, a LOT more than I thought I'd have to. I'm here, mostly, but even Mastodon is filled with the disaster headlines, you know?

I'm 64, and when the overwhelming thoughts come up, I then think "Well, I have MAYBE 20 more years, based on life expectancies and my genetics.

I have a lot less years ahead of me than what are behind me, if you get my meaning!

I imagine I 'm not alone in the worry of where we will end up in 4 years. I have begun looking JUST for hopeful news, and though I appreciate and help those who are fighting against it, my fear is it's too late?

Anyway, just putting it out there. It helps to get it out of my head.

See how it's our fault that our society and culture doesn't value human life but only Profit
"Diet, exercise" ie "your fault, you lazy fat bastards"

Maybe abandoning us to a Pandemic doesn't help? Have you thought about that? Or the microplastics in our bodies, or the Climate Change, etc....

The Guardian · Life expectancy growth stalls across Europe as England sees sharpest decline, say researchersBy Andrew Gregory

Death Clock dot org says if I live in Mexico, I will die at age 80 of Malaria, 12 years earlier than men in Mexico of my BMI. Then it says that, in the USA, I will live to be almost 91, dying of liver failure 7 years later than men in the US with my BMI.

I call BS on malaria. Mosquitoes don't bite me.

...improved.

Last, but not least: #healthcare access in the #US is pretty much a "pay yourself" issue. By forgiving millions in student loans and boosting child-tax credit I assume that many people were able to invest in their own health, maybe for the 1st time.
This would have to be cross-checked statistically, OFC.
In particular, IDK how life expectancy at birth is measured, derived, and forecast.

While I don't analyze health statistics on a regular basis, as you do, Dominik (👍,) I have been following #US politics continuously.

Actually, the uptick in 2023 is not surprising to me: former President #JoeBiden made #health a top priority of its administration, also due to personal experiences. Out of the top of my head, he did make many major life-saving drugs available for lower-income residents. Also, general healthcare access...
