TheShellyTea<p>I feel like grading gen ed college papers in the before-LLM times was useful preparation for identifying <a href="https://mastodon.art/tags/LLM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LLM</span></a> content in the wild today. Probably because there's a big element of BS detection to both.</p><p>I don't know if this would be useful to anyone, but here are some of my checks...</p>
SecretAntelope 🌈☕<p>I really hate the term "vibe coding" - particularly because there is an assumption that it's easy to get usable and bug-free code out of an LLM. I use it as a tool to bounce ideas off of and spend most of my time telling it how wrong it is. Occasionally, you get some great results in a much faster way. It's definitely not plug and play - or a substitute for experience.</p><p><a href="https://covertcreatures.xyz/tags/ai" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ai</span></a> <a href="https://covertcreatures.xyz/tags/llm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>llm</span></a> <a href="https://covertcreatures.xyz/tags/chatgpt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>chatgpt</span></a> <a href="https://covertcreatures.xyz/tags/programming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>programming</span></a> <a href="https://covertcreatures.xyz/tags/datascience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>datascience</span></a> <a href="https://covertcreatures.xyz/tags/sql" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sql</span></a></p>

Peter Binkley<p>I'm liking OLMO2 as a general-purpose local model for summarizing texts in Ollama. Much faster than the others I've been using, and does a good job at things like extracting lists of persons, places and organizations. <a href="https://code4lib.social/tags/LLM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LLM</span></a></p>
Nate Gaylinn<p>People <em>want</em> LLMs to be general purpose minds that can solve problems of all sorts. They're <em>not</em>. But some people are trying to "fix" this by giving LLMs plug-ins that serve as tools. Maybe Chat GPT sucks at solving math problems, but what if we gave it a pocket calculator?</p><p>I get the urge to mix LLM's amazing natural language ability with the precision and efficiency of traditional computing. That makes perfect sense! But we should be using LLMs to implement the language parts of our program, not using the LLM as our program and letting it decide when to defer to traditional computing.</p><p>Why? Because LLM's don't problem solve, they generate text! They are not reliable, predictable, or verifiable, <em>by design</em>. They are meant for fuzzy pattern matching and NLP. It's fascinating that LLMs can sorta do math and reasoning <em>at all</em>, but that doesn't mean they're the right tool for the job.</p><p><a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/llm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>llm</span></a> <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/ai" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ai</span></a> <a href="https://tech.lgbt/tags/programming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>programming</span></a></p>
