Thank you for the ever-pertinent reminder to read these brilliant expositions.

Quiet manifestos by two masters in #CS. They are must reads for anyone who is interested in designing systems and tools, in any field. The calls for #simplicity, economy & useability are of universal relevance. And these biographically motivated essays are themselves models in simplicity and concreteness, resting unboastingly on the personal achievements of their authors.

[jmk] - Sehr interessantes Interview aus dem Jahr 2021 mit Prof. em. Niklaus Wirth, Jahrgang 1934, der leider verstorben ist. Ein angenehmer bescheidener Mensch erzählt dort seinen Werdegang und wie er u.a. die Programmiersprache Pascal entwickelte und damit weltberühmt wurde. Mit Pascal habe ich damals meine Diplomarbeit erstellt und war für mich der Einstieg in die Programmiersprache C.

#lisp #pascal #lispmachine #symbolics #niklauswirth The Zmacs editor had a syntax-aware PASCAL mode. One could also run PASCAL programs from the Lisp Listener (aka REPL). The debugger than understood PASCAL stack frames, could display the source code and execute PASCAL snippets...

I wonder what Wirth would have to say about it. He was developing similar computer systems: Lilith with Modula 2 and Ceres with Oberon.

5️⃣ Am 1. Januar ist Niklaus Wirth, Schweizer Informatikpionier, im Alter von 88 Jahren verstorben.

Er wurde u.a. für seine Programmiersprache #Pascal und Weiterentwicklungen sowie seinen konsequenten Minimalismus und Kritik an langsamen IT-Systemen bekannt.

Hier ein Überblick über sein Lebenswerk.
