We were getting ready to issue ~400 drawings to East Kentucky Power. One of the senior techs came over and said that a plane had hit one of the twin towers. I thought it was just a small plane or something. He said, it was an airliner.
We couldn't access CNN, but the CBC had coverage. We got on just as the second plane hit. We were gob smacked. We left one work station on CBC, but kept working on the package. It was unbelievable.
They closed the North American airspace. Planes were being diverted to a bunch of Canadian airports, including Moncton, where my folks lived. I called, and they said they were on their way out to volunteer making sandwiches. They put their spare rooms out to billet passengers.
I was left wondering if I was about to be called up or not as I was still a reservist.
The whole situation was surreal.

I slept late, having been told I had been laid off the day before. My best friend called and left VM. Turned on CNN and saw the second plane hit the WTC. Spent a lot of the day in an AIM chat room sharing news (I was CNN) and gathering reports on friends. Where were you? #NineEleven

I was getting ready to take a group of students to London for the semester. We were supposed to leave on Sept. 12. After a week of calling airlines, conferring with the administration over what to do, my college said the trip was on. We left Sept. 19. I came home three months later to a country that had changed utterly. I haven't felt entirely comfortable here since then.
