When I consider activism
I hear a solid note
shared through many voices
One cannot hold a note
sustained forever
we gotta breathe and rest
together we hold the note forever
breathing and resting
while others Sing
the Songs of Freedom
continue forever
Our collective voices share
We are not free until
we are all free...

Listen to the collective nature of this Philip Glass piece, a symphonic note, a chord, together in motion and rhythm...

Here is the performance, which for practicality reasons, I've had to cut short at around 4 minutes.

But in the true spirit of minimalism, with this short sketch I see no reason why this couldn't last the entire duration of the original opera and more...

So OMM gas released an album with Philip Glass playing his own works on solo piano.

I have only listened to a few pieces yet.

First, Glass is a terrible piano player.

Second, those versions are significantly different from other recordings and official scores. Truman Sleeps, for example, have changes in harmony and structure and a new ending, making it a much more interesting piece, albeit terribly recorded.

Happy Birthday to Philip Glass! His memoir "Words Without Music" includes one of the best pieces of creative advice I've ever read:

“If you don’t know what to do, there’s actually a chance of doing something new. As long as you know what you’re doing, nothing much of interest is going to happen.”

This arrangement of Philip Glass' Etude no. 6 - originally for #Piano, arranged here for string quartet - has me hoping that this is the start of a larger arrangement project. Quite engaging and works very well.

Would love to hear all of the etudes arranged in this way!

(Sadly, don't see anything from the #HalcyonStringQuartet suggesting that more is forthcoming.)

PHILIP GLASS
Mishima
1985 U.S. pressing

A good afternoon to play this; raw, damp and dreary.

I love Mishima. It’s a hard watch, but a very good movie. A movie I haven’t seen in close to 20 years.
Glass’ soundtrack however, is something I revisit a lot, and I’m not necessarily a Philip Glass fan.

There’s an odd, haunting quality to this score that has staid with me for years.
