Well, I just went to the <strong><a href="https://allovertheplace.ca/tags/SocialSecurity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SocialSecurity</span></a></strong> website to try and get a benefit verification letter, which I need because I'm trying to reestablish a <strong><a href="https://allovertheplace.ca/tags/VocationalRehabilitation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VocationalRehabilitation</span></a></strong> case. And, since the NEM is a private (mostly) market it all makes sense from the investors and shareholder perspective. My beef is this: there are services which should not be left in the hands of capitalists - health, energy, education and housing come to mind - without a heavy dose of regulations which include price controls geared to the benefit of all citizens. </p><p>Public services (whatever they are) can function just as well as profit seeking corporate businesses provided they are at arms length from politicians and answerable to some legal constraints. Ther are various models for doing this and I am more than sure that some of these work better than competing profit driven capitalist structures! Such is my opinion which, surely, is supported by historical examples. </p><p>Capitalism only works when there is equitable distribution of wealth in the society. Strypey<p>OTOH I'm deeply grateful for our publicly-funded health service. When elderly relatives get unwell, we don't have to panic about astronomical bills and wrangling with insurance companies.</p><p>I'd happily pay higher taxes to have more universal public services like this, and I suspect I'm not the only kiwi who'd say this. The Ministry of Health should be running its own BigBlueButton or Jitsi Meet servers for this. Strypey<p>Maybe we need something like a Public Services Commission? Which would canvas and represent the PoV of the public on the convenient (for *us*) and *effective* running of public services?
