I casually mentioned to the electrician doing the circuit breaker box move in my home that the California code requiring smoke detectors in each bedroom in my small house seemed like overkill, and he launched into an impassioned speech as to why they’re so important and how they save lives.

So go make sure you have your smoke alarms!

A one-page sheet entitled: 2019 California Residential Code Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms certification It goes on to list the requirements: Smoke alarms shall be installed in the following locations: 1. In each sleeping room. 2. Outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms. 3. On each additional story of the dwelling, including basements, habitable attics, and uninhabitable attics. Carbon monoxide alarms shall be installed in the following locations: 1. Outside of each separate dwelling unit sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms. (i.e. Hallway) 2. On every level of a dwelling unit including basement.

Things have taken a turn for me in both good and bad ways recently. I got accepted into my dream school, but I'm struggling to be able to afford to go. And since being accepted into my dream school and wanting to leave my abusive household, I'm at an even higher risk of homelessness now. Anything helps greatly, even just sharing. Back in the early 1960s, at the Naval Base in Yokosuka, Japan, there was a park near the seawall that held a special place in our hearts. The centerpiece of the park was the remains of an old airplane, with a slide extending from the back. We affectionately nicknamed it "The Seaplane" and spent countless hours there, letting our imaginations soar. Of course, this makeshift jungle gym would never meet today’s safety standards—sharp edges and all. Yet, despite the potential hazards, we all managed to walk away with just stories to tell and memories to cherish. Remarkably, children would venture to the park on their own, drawn to the charm of The Seaplane by the seawall. It was a different era, full of adventure and freedom.
