It is pure fantasy to think that you could have done things differently or lived your life any other way.

This dream of an imagined past feeds an equally unhelpful delusion of the future in which you consciously learn and strive to change ‘yourself’ and do things differently.

All of these behaviours and activities happen, of course, but not as the result of conscious so-called will but automatically and spontaneously from our unconscious.

We do what we do when we do it whatever our conscious awareness may declare to the contrary.

Our thoughts and ideas are the least of us. Always late to the party that’s already in full swing, uninvited yet full of their own self importance and righteousness. Taking credit for everything and responsibility for nothing.

I like to buy flowers for my wife. If I set a fixed reminder to do this on the 1st of every month, it can feel scripted, which takes away from the gesture.

With #Spontaneity, I can set a rolling reminder to buy flowers sometime within the next month, keeping it feeling thoughtful and genuine. When that task is marked completed, then the next reminder is calculated within the following month (with a buffer ensuring two reminders don’t happen too close together).

Hey everyone! It's been 10 days since my last #Spontaneity update, but I'll be sharing plenty this weekend. Here's some highlights:

The good: Made huge strides in development. The app is really taking shape!

The bad: I maaaaaay have neglected the marketing & communcations side a bit. Oops.

Balancing a full-time job, family life, and app development (planning, coding, and marketing) is challenging. Fellow devs, how do you manage it all?

Your feedback means the world to me!

hyperfocus.dev · Building in Public Ep. 2 - Spontaneity and the Journey to Empower Individuals with ADHD | hyperfocus.devJoin me in the second update of building Spontaneity, a mobile app designed for ADHD, mental health, and productivity. In this post, I discuss recent progress, challenges, and future goals for this innovative app.

Getting the calendar and reminder list to stay in sync, whether you click the calendar or scroll the list, was challenging. It also had to default to today on the reminder list. It took me almost a full day of on-and-off work to figure it out. The animation still needs smoothing out, but I already have an idea for that and have documented it to revisit later.

Another hectic week! I've been deep in #Spontaneity the past few days and what I'm planning for the initial launch. I'm happy to say I've made enough progress to feel good about expanding the scope for launch.

As far as setting a date for the launch, I have 2 things I'm taking into consideration:

1. My son is due to be born in January
2. I don't want to launch right before he's born and then be unable to provide the app with the support it needs.

In the context of the recent UK far-right/ fascist-thug riots and the resulting counter-responses, I read the following with interest. It’s a long read and dense in content so I’ll prob need to read it several times to fully digest!

🧵 1/3 As you told me before, my very first workshop with children (9 yrs old) in our heritage centre was perfect. It was such a joy to experience what most adults suppress: #enthusiasm, #curiosity, #passion to #experiment, thirst for #learning, and #spontaneity. I learnt at least as much from the children as they learnt from us.
My fear of having to keep an eye on everything was unfounded.

I couldn't decide what to have for my tea so wandered up to the local Sainsbury for some inspiration ...... or a pizza.

I've come back with 3 Aubergines, 1kg Carrots, 2 Sweet Potatoes, 2 Mangos, and a bag of stir fry. Total £2.09. The Sweet Potatoes cost £1.39; it was tempting to just buy the other things for 70p!

Tonight's feast will be stir fried aubergine with whatever sauces I have in the cupboard, followed by fresh mango.

Excellent talk by Iain McGilchrist, with so many deep insights into how "mechanisms" destroy personal authenticity, common sense, spontaneity and humanity in our lives. Deeply true.

We must fight to maintain the remnants of unmechanised interaction. In our work, in our personal lives.

Mastodon to me is one small but important part of that battle.
