@scottwilson @mozillaofficial Peeps are ofc entitled to be protective of "their" #Firefox, given the passion which many of us rightfully feel about #FOSS. #Mozilla have demonstrably been disappointing many of its ardent userbase for many years, & this recent imbroglio obvs has not helped re reputational damage. All that said though, the last month'ish of global hysteria & anger has been ridiculous. The amount of conspiracy-theory'ing has been astonishing, & commonly based on nothing but #FUD. So many peeps decided that Mozilla already are evil & so choose to wilfully misinterpret every subsequent misstep as something more than it is, then refuse point blank to accept the explanations.

Meanwhile, those of us unswayed by FUD, & not interested in cutting off our nose to spite our face, simply calmly evaluate the explanations, cautiously accept them, but take the simple precautionary step as well of disabling #AI, disabling #telemetry, then continuing on with our day.

Koala! Go fetch our data!

An underweight koala, with several high-tech monitoring devices attached to its body is lost in a bulldozed habitat. It is making way for cars and a highway. The endangered animal had " a collar with a VHF tracker around its neck, a pin stitched between its shoulder blades and a blue tag on its ear."

@mauro Oh dear oh dear. So they stuffed up recent comms; that's all that happened -- nothing actually changed adversely in the browser itself. It's been clarified already, & furthermore disabling #telemetry & #ai is elementary, both directly in the UI, & also in about:config, after doing which, even for the most Qanony conspiracist, what actually is the terrifying danger? Furthermore, Thunderbird is not even part of Mozilla anymore, & were entirely unaffected by any of this storm in a teacup. It's hilarious to observe humans behaving like stampeding cattle. 🙄🤦‍♀️

@fnwbr And yet, here i be, revelling in the delightful UX that is my :firefox_nightly: , with all the #telemetry disabled, the #AI disabled, numerous other parameters hardened via my #userJS, with the exquisite #Sidebery & its infinitely-nestable tree-tabs & multiple #Workspaces on its LHS, & the brilliant project #FirefoxSecondSidebar with my 21 #WebPanels on its RHS. It's such a great daily browsing UX, unfazed by the last ten days of global #FUD [all the so-called nasties can be disabled, either via simple clicks in the Settings UI, or otherwise via about:config / user.js]. Herd-mentality is a ridiculous trait of humans. 🙄🤦‍♀️

:firefox_nightly: #FirefoxNightly + #Mv2 #uBO + #Sidebery + #FirefoxSecondSidebar = THE best browsing & sophisticated tab management + Web Panel UX i've ever had, easily eclipsing Vivaldi, :floorp: #Floorp, :zenbrowser: #ZenBrowser, Waterfox, LibreWolf... ergo = 💜🥳🎉👯‍♀️

:firefox_nightly: #FirefoxNightly + #NativeVerticalTabs + #uBlockOrigin + #FirefoxSecondSidebar = Very usable already as of Feb 2025, albeit less powerful than Sidebery, ergo = 💜 🎉

Isn't it about time we start rallying against #proprietary #firmware already?

From every #EV and #car being a glorified #telemetry machine, to every chip out there basically harboring #SecretSauce with the "trust me bro" guarantee attached.

Neither #US interests, #Chinese interests or private interests should hold so much power. No one should.

All firmware; I repeat, ALL FIRMWARE should be #OpenFirmware. The firmware isn't open? #Ban the #product outright.

So for some of you that think the verbage on the #Mozilla #Firefox is enough, to me - and to many others - it is hard to trust them anymore.

People had a problem with the #Pocket affiliation, people had a problem with the #telemetry, people had problems seeing the new #ad system as privacy safe, and people had a problem with the new verbage in the #ToS. These issues are compounded.

But also, as #primeagen has pointed out, making a modern browser is complex and expensive.

How do we fix that?

@thelinuxexperiment
10:10 - What? #gnome has #telemetry program? Didn't @thelinuxEXP meant the #fedora telemetry program, or there is exists something im not aware of? Anyway, it would be cool to know what these #gnome_extension are...

As a side note, do I would love to #blur_my_shell, but it visibely reduces smoothness of my desktop (240Hz refresh rate), is it fault of my configuration, or common thing with the extension? I got addicted to high refresh rate and cant now go any lower ;-;

Do you consider telemetry (both opt-in and opt-out) in FOSS products as support towards development? Or is any kind of telemetry unaccetable for you?
And do you actively turn it on/off?

Strictly asking about FOSS!

"The best way to ensure that would be through a comprehensive consumer data privacy legislation with strong data minimization rules and requirements for clear, opt-in consent. "
No.

The best way is NOT 'opt-in' for 'consent'.

The best way is to just make it a felony to gather telemetry data, period.

A machine manufacturer has ZERO business gathering telemetry, or even having the technical ability to gather telemetry, on its customer use of machines, unless the use of telemetry is integral to the customer performing a task (like GPS-guided tractor plowing).

EFF is proposing a softball solution that will not stop abuse. A 'regulatory violation' doesn't stop the rich. FELONY CHARGES do stop them.

This mental virus of wanting to track everyone is a sign of gross criminality and control freak neurosis. The right thing to do is to pass a federal law just making telemetry gathering and marketing a felony, with no opt-in process, and prohibit tracking devices from existing in the cars in the first place. Nobody needs to know your GPS history to diagnose your engine and drive train.

"But what about onstar?"

Do you really think they invented OnStar and similar systems for YOUR benefit?

I'm so proud! #Sennheiser never would have allowed a #garage-built #proton-pack to make it in to their behind-the-scenes video! (That's me starting at 2:36)

For contrast, don't miss the Sennheiser #Spectera video.

I'm doing the next generation protonpack #fpga telemetry system as an #opensource #openhardware design.

Team #mastodon will help me out, right?
