My favorite rose is in bloom: Rosa chinensis 'Viridiflora' Also called "The Green Rose". It's a mutant that lost its ability to properly make a flower. On dissection, it's an infinitely recursive set of leaf-like sepals. It cannot reproduce on its own. It's been hand propagated through cuttings over several centuries. It is one unique specimen carried through time solely by people that find it fascinating. I believe it was first documented in Western Culture in the 1700s.

A voice spoke, warm and kindly, just beyond the barrier, amongst the deep shadows of the old trees. The leaves rustled gently, in time with each word, which wasn't noticed, because of the rabbit.

It was incredibly cute.

"Please help me catch him, he's so helpless and tasty."

"Will there be a reward?"

"Yes."

The rabbit lured the lone human into the thicket. The forest burped, and the rabbit was never without a warren or delicious greens.

Science fiction has ALWAYS come with a sizable dose of social commentary.

Shelley was writing about the dangers of poor empathy and pride in creating new beings, with Frankenstein.

Wells was talking about the arrogance and inhumanity of colonialism when he wrote "War of the Worlds".

Even Verne, who was relatively apolitical, gave us Nemo, who was anticolonial.

Heinlein's politics were loud, if not always consistent.

Asimov's main political interest was that science itself should matter.

Guten Morgen!

I can't pin everything, so here's a thread of my threads🧵

You will find here my tips and testimonies about transidentity, medical transphobia, disability, accessibility, ableism including sanism, abuses and many more.

Boost appreciated. 👍🏻

I came across a female stag beetle today, who had won a fight with a cobweb and was celebrating by taking a rest on the warm tarmac footpath. The busy, narrow footpath used as a haunt by impatient people. A hand was proffered to initial scepticism, but upon finding the hand was warm, this seemed like a better deal.

I then spent five minutes trying to persuade her to dismount and take to the nearby bushes, safe from feet.

@thegibson I also think this is the most important part of the article:

Timnit Gebru, a prominent AI ethicist Google fired in 2020 (though the search giant claims she resigned), said the discussion over AI sentience risks “derailing” more important ethical conversations surrounding the use of artificial intelligence. “Instead of discussing the harms of these companies, the sexism, racism, AI colonialism, centralization of power, white man’s burden (building the good “AGI” [artificial general intelligence] to save us while what they do is exploit), spent the whole weekend discussing sentience,” she tweeted. “Derailing mission accomplished.”

Zutaten für 2 Personen:
ca. 200 g (1,5 kl. Tassen) Reis, in doppelter Menge Brühe od. Wasser gekocht
1/3 Dose Ananas in Stücken sowie den Saft
1 kl. Zwiebel (gern rote) feingehackt
1 EL Pflanzenöl
1 kl. Knoblauchzehe, ganz fein gehackt
2 geh. EL Currypulver (Madrascurry, etwas schärfer, passt hier super!)
½ Gurke gewürfelt
1 kl. Rote Paprika gewürfelt
Saft 1/2 Zitrone (oder mehr, je nach Geschmack)
Pfeffer & Salz zum Abschmecken

I've read that conversation of the Google engineer on leave with chatbot. Do I think it's sentient? I don't know, but I think it is a masterful manipulator. And that is what worries me at the moment, much more than the 'is it the sentient?' question. Such a powerful program that can manipulate people so well in the hands of a company like Google (or Meta, or...) is, to me, extremely scary. We've seen how easily simple bots can manipulate people. Something so sophisticated: unstoppable.

In seriousness, I think this is actually an underappreciated element of anti-fascism.

A core element of fascist ideology is the idea that there was once a perfect, ideal past, that we through our degeneracy let slip away. The fascist promises to bring us back to it by being a stern ruler who will punish us for our sins.

So it's important to help people understand that there was NEVER a perfect, ideal past. There was just people and their various screw-ups. And people now are fundamentally the same as people then. The clothes change, the rituals change, but people are people.
