jeffluszcz<p>Ship tracking: tropospheric ducting and increased AIS reception in two graphs! Last week it looks like my AIS reception reports were greatly enhanced by Tropospheric ducting (a weather condition that allows radio signals to be bent back to earth over the horizon) increasing my max distance received from about 8 miles to 113 and my messages/day from 3K to over 40k! Looks like we're back to normal <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ais" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ais</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/aisCatcher" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>aisCatcher</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/rtlsdr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rtlsdr</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/hamr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hamr</span></a> (thanks to <span class="h-card"><a href="https://mastodon.radio/@g0lfp" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>g0lfp</span></a></span> for the correction!)</p>
jeffluszcz<p>I don't know if it's just an amazing summer like day and everyone is boating around or if there is something like skip going on, but my AIS reception reports just went through the roof (now seeing reports out to 22 miles which is a record for me) <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/rtlsdr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rtlsdr</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ais" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ais</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AisCatcher" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AisCatcher</span></a></p>
jeffluszcz<p>Rebuilding AIS-catcher and reinstalling, it seemed to stopped receiving though no errors were appearing on the console. Doesn't seem Heat/PPM or rtlsdr dongle error related though not quite sure what could be going on. Something changed when I added the "FILE stat.bin BACKUP 10" option but even backing that out doesn't change behavior. Could just be a glitch but who knows....it doesn't seem to preserve state between runs so hard to see where corruption could be.... <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/rtlsdr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rtlsdr</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/aiscatcher" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>aiscatcher</span></a></p>
jeffluszcz<p>AIS-catcher success! Seeing ships including moving ships on the built in web server now. Not bad for a compromised location almost 5 miles away. Need to work on the Linux services scripts and explore the pushing of data to the commercial AIS databases now <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ais" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ais</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/RaspberryPi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RaspberryPi</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/rtlsdr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rtlsdr</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/sdr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sdr</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AisCatcher" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AisCatcher</span></a></p>
