#Arizona #TwoSpirit #Powwow empowers community amid growing #AntiTrans legislation

Tuesday, March 4, 2025
By Brandelyn Clark

"The Arizona Two Spirit Powwow returned to #PhoenixArizona on Saturday, February 22, to spotlight Indigenous #LGBTQ+ and two-spirit people for a day of cultural celebration and community.

"Hosted at South Mountain Community College, the event welcomed dancers, drum groups and attendees from across the region. More than just a traditional gathering, the powwow allowed two-spirit individuals to celebrate their identities and honor their place in Indigenous culture.

“'This (powwow) is a perfect example of a #SafeSpace for people to come and dance in whatever category they want to dance in, dress the way that they feel good about themselves, love who they want to love, and they are safe here. This tells the community we are here, we are here for you,' Sheila Lopez said.

"Lopez is the founder of Arizona’s first Two Spirit Powwow and the first Native chapter of #PFLAG, which bills itself as the country’s largest advocacy organization that supports LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.

"President Donald Trump’s recent executive actions have left #transgender and two-spirit communities uncertain about their rights and recognition going forward.

"'It is super important right now with the administration, what they’re doing to pretty much wipe away trans people. It’s super critical right now for us to continue to show up in the community, to say we’re here, we’re not going anywhere and you can’t erase us, period,' Lopez said."

Anti trans hate drove me off all other social media, ignorance runs rampant through my country like a virus, I fear anti-trans legislation will take away my right to live...

But despite it all, since transitioning, I've been happier, more confident, more comfortable in who I am, than I ever was before. They call it "living your truth": it's an accurate description, and my truth is worth facing all that's arrayed against me.

#Trump’s #AntiTrans policies mirror the #LavenderScare, when thousands of #LGBTQ+ #federal employees were purged from the government (the 1940s-60s). 🚨 Fueled by #McCarthyism and #MoralPanic, it destroyed careers and lives, leading to suicides but also sparking a civil rights movement. Now, Trump bans #trans people from the #military, rolls back #healthcare, and fuels fear for political gain, echoing history’s worst #injustices.

@tillybridges stay strong! Transpeople will always have my support!

As for all the #antitrans people stop harassing people for wanting to be happy! I've seen one of my oldest and closest friends transition and he has never seemed more happy and confident as he does now! He is real and his happiness is real, period.

I suspect it is merely coincidence, but I went to #FamilySearch today looking for a document and there was a TOS / Privacy policy update. And I started reading them. In and amongst the absolute crap how they own any work you do or upload, and that you are required to only add factually accurate content, they also added #antitrans #antihomosexual rules and guidelines.

I have never felt more like attacking a resource’s reliability.

I won’t. Neither will I be a positive contributor.

Reviews of the browser plugin "Shinigami Eyes," which is supposed to highlight LGBTQ allies and people hostile to that community, is being brigaded by people who are subverting its original intent.

The plugin works by flagging posts and comments across a wide swath of social media and online comment sections in colors to indicate whether the person/account posting is someone supportive of LGBTQ people (in green) or who behave with sociopathy or negativity towards that community (in red).

Comments from the Mozilla add-on directory (addons.mozilla.org/en-US/andro) seem to be in wide agreement that, over the past year, as the plugin gained wider use, something happened that resulted in LGBTQ "friendlies" being marked in red, while people who actively encourage harm to that community become highlighted in green. The end result is that people cannot trust what the color code means - the entire purpose of the plugin.

I don't really have any skin in this game, since I don't use the plugin, but it has been my experience that community-driven blocklists often get polluted (usually through deliberate mal-action) with false or misleading reporting of specific accounts by people who are hostile to the blocklist - usually because they or people they support appear on the blocklist.

I also don't have any good suggestions for the developers. I just wanted to post this to call attention to this (possibly) under-the-radar subversion of a tool that many in a marginalized community may have found useful at one point.

Maybe someone who reads this will have a better suggestion for how to accomplish the same goals in a way that is more resiliant against hostile action by those who routinely dehumanize and degrade marginalized communities.

And maybe someone who is kinder than me could help the people who are subverting this tool find some therapy and some love in their own lives, so they don't feel the need to put in the effort to harm so many others.
