Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"There's a clear similarity between the mid-2010s and our current moment: they were both times when the hype around artificial intelligence and automation were ascendent, if not reaching a fever pitch. A decade ago, the story was that rapid advances in AI and robotics were about to wipe out millions of jobs – maybe even half of all jobs in the United States – and self-driving cars played into that story.</p><p>Within a few years, taxi drivers, truck drivers, and delivery drivers were supposedly going to find themselves out of work as the computers took over. But the technology didn't advance to that level and the predicted widespread job losses didn't materialise.</p><p>Today, we're in a similar place. The explosion of generative AI a couple years ago has created an environment where it's easy to sell a similar story of the inevitability of self-driving cars all over again.</p><p>There's no question we're slowly starting to see more of them on the streets, but that doesn't mean they're going to be ubiquitous anytime soon – if ever – nor will they solve the entrenched problems in our transport system.</p><p>Technology doesn't solve what are inherently political problems. The deaths on our roads and the time we spend stuck in traffic or waiting for an infrequent bus are not because we're using the wrong technology. They're the result of choices we've collectively made for how to organise our transport system and give cars primacy over everything else."</p><p><a href="https://www.dezeen.com/2024/11/21/self-driving-cars-hype-opinion" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">dezeen.com/2024/11/21/self-dri</span><span class="invisible">ving-cars-hype-opinion</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/DriverlessCars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DriverlessCars</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Cities" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cities</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Urbanism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Urbanism</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Transportation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Transportation</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Mobility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mobility</span></a></p>

They never arrived then, and likely won’t this time either. Tesla’s share price dropped 8% when markets opened the morning after the event, signaling investors are getting fed up with his lies as the company struggles to sell cars to customers who have plenty of other options. For a long time, it looked like Tesla would become the automotive startup that would make it. But plagued by a self-obsessed CEO, continued complaints of poor build quality, and an inability to deliver new products on time or on budget, its days may be numbered.</p><p>Elon Musk got used to getting by with bold statements and flashy visuals that might never go anywhere. But his ability to lie his way to success was premised on the goodwill he’d built up with the public and investors knowing they were still going to make their money at the end of the day. His descent into billionaire grievance politics and his decision to lash out at a world that expects him to play by the same rules that apply to everyone else may kill that goodwill once and for all. His fall can’t come soon enough, but will open more space for a future that looks nothing like the one he has in mind."</p><p><a href="https://disconnect.blog/elon-musks-cybercab-recycles-a-decade-broken-promises/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">disconnect.blog/elon-musks-cyb</span><span class="invisible">ercab-recycles-a-decade-broken-promises/</span></a></p>

Flipboard Tech Desk<p>Self-driving vehicles could be on U.K. roads within two years, after the Automated Vehicles (AV) Act received royal assent to become law.</p><p>A core part of the new legislation, which has been in the works since 2022, confirms that corporations will be the ones held responsible in the event of a crash, “meaning a human driver would not be liable for incidents related to driving while the vehicle is in control.”</p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mstdn.social/@TechCrunch" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>TechCrunch</span></a></span> has more.</p><p><a href="https://flip.it/ortPo7" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">flip.it/ortPo7</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/AutonomousVehicles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AutonomousVehicles</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/DriverlessCars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DriverlessCars</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Robotaxi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Robotaxi</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Automotive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Automotive</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Tech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tech</span></a></p>
notBread 🏴‍☠️<p>Companies making driverless cars and trucks are going through a lot of trouble to recreate a worse version of trains to make up for a lacklustre public transportation system.</p><p>High speed rail can go above 200 kph (120 mph) without needing to slow down until their stop. Cargo trains can hold more than 4 trucks worth of freight in one car. A well maintained system has very few crashes and can move people and goods far more efficiently than cars and trucks. </p><p>However, instead of investing in already proven infrastructure, companies are using investor money to force individualised train cars to be a thing. But instead of moving a massive amount of people around, they mostly just sit in car parks.</p><p>If you want to not have to drive a car in a city, that's what busses and trams are for. If you want to not have to drive a car between cities that's what trains are for. Why do we need new technology for transportation when the old technology serves us well?</p><p>[ <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/transportation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transportation</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/driverlessCars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>driverlessCars</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/driverlessTrucks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>driverlessTrucks</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/trains" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>trains</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/fuckCars" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fuckCars</span></a> ]</p>
