Jeff Smith スミスThis Black Forest Rye ESB-ish ale is a success. This rye malt gives a beautiful sweet red currant taste and my own EKG hops seem to have hit the mark on IBUs. Beautiful foam. Jeff SmithRiwaka after drying - 140g this year vs 80g last year. And there is still that less mature and smaller bine that I might get to harvest. Likely bringing it up to 2X the harvest in year two of growing these. When I split the rhizomes and can grow maybe three sets of bines I’ll be in fantastic shape for Riwaka. Now to keep nurturing my Wakatu, East Kent Goldings and Perle. Jeff SmithLooks like more than twice the quantity of hops as last year. Won’t know until I finish drying and then weigh them. But having to pick them earlier before this storm comes through means the cones are smaller and while they smell great when I rub them, they won’t be as full aroma and flavor. But that’s better than all brown, beaten and useless if they get abused by the wind. Jeff SmithHalf a 20L bucket of hops before the rain started. Picked all but one small, and still not quite ready, bine and now onto racks and into the dehydrator. More hops than I can fit in a single batch so spreading them out on other racks. Time to make some racks out of window screen probably. I loosen the rope that holds the twine to lower the bine some and then eventually have enough slack to pull out the bamboo pole. I leave the bine after picking the hops on the assumption that the leaves continue to help give energy to the rhyzome. Jeff Smith スミスI’m thinking to try to make hop water. Never tried a commercial version so don’t have a point of reference, but the idea of sparkling, slightly hoppy water is appealing. I did do a water kefir with some hop tea once and it didn’t really work - I didn’t get it hoppy enoughBrülosophy and More Beer articles seems to have some good ideas.
