This place, that was compared to the empire capital, Cusco, was the northern border of the Inca territory. AltonDooleyTIL that this photo I took in Hemet, CA yesterday, which I thought were lichens, are actually colonies of sessile scale <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/insects" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#insects</a>! The little brown specks are actually the instars. Dactylopius opuntiae is 1 of ~11 species in the genus. They live almost entirely on cactus plants, especially prickly pear (Opuntia sp.)Dactylopius, or cochineals, are also the source of the red dye carmine, used extensively by the <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Incas" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Incas</a>. New AmautaPachakuteq was the 9th Inka of Tawantinsuyu (Inkan Empire), turning it from a kingdom to an Empire. He defeated the Chankas in 1438, saving the Inkas and making them the dominant Andean power.
