Alright guys!

I did a #poll about how to best use a #donation I got that was extremely generous and made me cry for two hours.

Thank you again Mr. Anderson.

You were FANTASTIC in all those movies with people bending in strange ways

I do that too, it's not the #matrix I'm just cripplingly #disabled and #tourettes is strange.

Anyway it was a tie so I decided on a #camera for #recording & #photography

50-100 dollars, refurbished and used preferred.

this is widely debated.

here is just one of many discussions:
lemmy.world/post/2077535

my reading of it is they are both much better than big corporate services. going forward, I value decentralization. however slightly better is the tech or trustworthy are the people currently running the org etc, I want a future with everybody able to communicate on one protocol and don't want anybody to dominate it. XMPP is a competitor but their usability is limited. thus #matrix

lemmy.worldHow does using Matrix compare with using Signal, privacy-wise? - Lemmy.WorldI’m not sure if it is entirely accurate to compare them in this way, as “Matrix” refers to simply the protocol, whereas “Signal” could refer to the applications, server, and protocol. That being said, is there any fundamental difference in how the Matrix ecosystem of federated servers, and independently developed applications compares to that of Signal that would make it less secure, overall, to use? The most obvious security vulnerability that I can think of is that the person you are communicating with (or, conceivably, oneself, as well) is using an insecure/compromised application that may be leaking information. I would assume that the underlying encryption of the data is rather trustworthy, and the added censorship resistance of federating the servers is a big plus. However, I do wonder if there are any issues with extra metadata generation, or usage tracking that could be seen as an opsec vulnerability for an individual. Signal, somewhat famously, when subpoenaed to hand over data, can only hand over the date that the account was created, and the last time it was used. What would happen if the authorities go after a Matrix user? What information about that user would they be able to gather?

* #xmpp (conversations and snikket) generally works really well and is a breeze to host with snikket. Resource consumption is essentially zero compared to #matrix. Never had any problems with encryption and audio/video calls. The onboarding for nontechnical users is somewhat involved.

* #deltachat had the lowest onboarding barriers. Dead simple to create new anonymous accounts and groups. Encryption just works. Unfortunately no audio/video calls, so somewhat limited.

I have been using #matrix and #xmpp for years and selfhosted both of them for a couple of months now. After using #deltachat for some weeks I've got the following conclusions:

* From a theoretical POV, #matrix looked like the best solution. EE, wide adoption, multi-client, the new "sexy". In practice the clients hat a lot of errors (encryption errors, untrusted devices, lost notifications) and the server side (#synapse) was a PITA to host, requiring a lot of resources when compared to #xmpp

To be clear, my optimism didn't really last all that long, say from about 1995 when the #WWW really took off, to 1998 or so when the #dotcom bubble started to crack. By 1999 it was obvious things weren't working out so well: The #Matrix hit at exactly the right moment.

But oh, how I miss that brief period when it looked like we were going to get #StarTrek instead.

@The_Counterforce

listening to the article now...

I'd recommend #matrix over Signal. encrypted as well but also decentralized.

we can go viral, there's just no algo assistance. if it happens (like happened with this post!), you know you earned it. and didn't make any corporation money in the process.

do you support #ccmusic? I think that's inherently punk.

#activitypub platforms serves as pretty powerful groupware as well.

If you have say a #VPN accessible #LAN inside a #VPS or the #cloud and you've got control over name resolution and certificate authorities, you can use #Mastodon, #Matrix, #PeerTube, etc as an internal organizational tool.

It might be seen as overkill, but if you want to use ActivityPub as an internal messaging and communication method, you can pretty much set up whatever platform suits your need.

It’s incredibly sad that we’ve lost the open, federated team chat space to #Matrix—where the only viable server isn’t open source, it’s debatable whether the underlying standard is truly open, and the most charitable thing I’ve heard about the UX is that it’s 'OK.'

I slowly started to start updating the Pony House repository on Github, the updates are still small, I had to cancel the previous update because I got too confused for myself to try to work.

I am writing a new script to load the timeline events to try to make the code lighter than my previous version. I am now working on the optimization part.
