Tak!Ok, mixed feelings about this one. I felt like it was a lot of fun through about … chapter 4. In chapter 5, when you have already completed 70% of the game, they introduce a cover mechanic, enemies that kill you (or your partner! which is also game over!) with one hit, and a bunch of "fuck you" hard boss fights.The cover thing (hide behind cover, pop out to fire) is objectively ok, but doesn't really fit with the resident evil gameplay style. It also necessarily changes the level design from outdoor locations across West Africa, the winding hallways of <del>Umbrella</del> Tricell research facilities, etc., to big rectangular rooms with rows of crates and half-height barriers. It wasn't until I finished the game that I realized the only reason it's there is because it's important for the later boss fights and they didn't want to just spring it on you during the battles.The instakill enemies, like … just don't. Don't give me a character that maneuvers like an arthritic sloth, put him in a narrow hallway with enemies that magically kill him, and make me try to lumber around them until I can get them to absorb enough bullets.Enough complaining, what was enjoyable? I liked the partner system, I liked Sheva - I wish I could have played as Sheva (don't "new game+" me, I'm not playing it again), and CPU Sheva was actually decent. You had partners with you a few times in Revelations, but they kind of plinked at something with a pistol a few times a minute - Sheva was legitimately helpful - although I feel like some parts, particularly the later boss fights, would have been easier with another human. Each partner having a small inventory and being able to do stuff like pass ammo back and forth was helpful at first, but quickly grew tedious, particularly in light of not being able to temporarily drop things. I liked the variety of gameplay in the earlier chapters - different settings, different vehicles, different challenges.The overall setting was not as problematic as I was apprehensive that it would be. It seemed fairly respectful (from my perspective as a white dude in Scandinavia), and it wasn't "white 'murican army guy mows down hordes of primitive black africans" like my first impression, and the theme was very much "<del>Umbrella</del> Tricell is coming in and exploiting people in various ways for their nefarious and ultimately eugenics-oriented purposes and that's bad", so 🤷Conclusion: meh? Maybe more fun with a friend?
