A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
The walls of books around me, dense with the past, formed a kind of insulation against the present world and its disasters. -Ross Macdonald, novelist (13 Dec 1915-1983)
Latest read, The Moving Target (1949) by Ross Macdonald; the first Lew Archer novel and the basis of Harper (with Paul Newman).
A re-read (it's been 35 years), Archer investigates the kidnapping of a LA millionaire. This must have felt ahead of its time. I'm surprised it was written in '49.

In January's newsletter, I recommended Janet Malcolm's IN THE FREUD ARCHIVES, Dwyer Murphy's AN HONEST LIVING, and Ross Macdonald's THREE NOVELS OF THE EARLY 1960S. Archives, book mysteries, murder!
