14missionAnyone wanting to outfit for the next <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/ShittyCamaraChallenge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ShittyCamaraChallenge</a> might want to check out the bargain bin at Glass Key Photo, on Sutter St, SF. Some of them need work, some seem to be completely fine shape.

14missionA Mastodon (well, maybe a Mammoth) skeleton at the La Brea Tar Pits Museum. The framing could have been better (would have liked to see the feet) but I didn't have too much choice; I had to prop up the Brownie on a nearby display case. The exposure came out just right, and I'm pleased with that. I used a light meter app on my phone and an exposure time cheat sheet I carry around, generated by a python script, and the results said I needed a 5sec exposure. I was a bit surprised because it really didn't seem that dark. I guess museums keep the lighting dim to protect artifacts, and your eyes adjust, so you're not aware how little light there really is. Anyway, 5sec (well, 5 Mississippis) turned out to be exactly right. Yay science! That's all the film shots from this trip that are worth sharing. 14missionHollywood!It was tricky to get a good shot of the Chinese Theater because there's a big façade of the Roman Colosseum out front for Gladiator II.The shots in the subway station were long exposures but not long enough. Having the sun in the frame definitely overwhelms everything. 14missionGiant spider sculpture, build out of a VW beetle body + legs, on US 50; West of Carson City, on the way to Virginia City. I was here last summer and took a picture that came out with some weird artifacts--it was a *really* hot day in the desert, and some of the markings on the paper backing came through on the film. I think it was due to light leaking in through the little round red-glass window where you see the film counter. Definitely recommend this town for lunch breaks going up or down the state. 14missionToday's entry. It was a bit of an experiment. The Brownie's viewfinder is meant to be viewed at about 18" distance, so you normally hold it against your stomach and look down. But what if there's something blocking the view at that level? So I tried holding it up over my head, upside down, and looking up into the viewfinder. 14missionWhoah... it actually works!Darkroom schmarkroom!Kind of amazing that there's absolutely nothing digital about getting this picture (well, still had to take a picture on my phone, save as a jpg, and upload to Mastodon to share with you guys, but you get my point).It's probably been at least 20 years since I've taken a completely analog picture; maybe longer. I assume even in the "late film era" that labs were scanning and printing digitally.So, previously I tried using very old cyanotype paper, and then mixing up my own solution, apparently not getting the process right, so I just ordered a fresh batch of readymade cyanotype paper and it works great. 14missionExperimenting with scanning methods some more. The first version of this image is using a flatbed scanner with a suspended battery-powered LED shop light. The second is with my phone and taking a picture with my phone, using the Kodak scanning app. In both versions I cropped and auto-adjusted with <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/irfanview" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#irfanview</a>. The scanner version is definitely better. The fact that the phone version has curved edges is weird; there's a sheet of plexiglass over the film so it's definitely not actually doing that. Neither my scanner nor my phone are particularly good.Kodak makes an "official" version of my rigged-up lightbox-and-phone holder scanning thing (<a href="https://www.kodak.com/en/consumer/product/printing-scanning/film-scanners/6x6-mobile-film-scanner/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank">https://www.kodak.com/en/consumer/product/printing-scanning/film-scanners/6x6-mobile-film-scanner/</a>). Results probably depend on your phone. 14missionSome <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/KodakBrownie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#KodakBrownie</a> pix taken in Santa Cruz a few weeks ago.The dark one was taken in "Neptune's Kingdom", the boardwalk's indoor minigolf. This area was once "the Plunge", and indoor pool. It's pretty dark in there. I had to prop up the camera on a table and take a really long exposure (6 seconds, I think).
