This Is My Glasgow<p>I love the granduer of this Neo-Baroque style 1930s telephone exchange in the Tradeston area of Glasgow. This Is My Glasgow<p>The former Tradeston Telephone Exchange. Designed in a Neo-Baroque style, it was built around 1935. Due to changes in telecommunications technology, it became vacant in the 1970s, and despite a number of attempts to rejuvinate it over the years, it has lain pretty much abandoned and decaying ever since.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowbuildings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowbuildings</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/telephoneexchange" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>telephoneexchange</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/tradeston" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tradeston</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>This seems to be because in the early days of the telephone, exchanges were built by smaller, independent telephone companies, and the Glasgow Corporation even had its own system. These weren't united into a national network run by the post office until around 1912, when George V was already on the throne. Thus, under his reign, many of the exchanges being used had private origins. </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/royalcypher" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>royalcypher</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/generalpostoffice" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>generalpostoffice</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/telephoneexchange" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>telephoneexchange</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowcorporation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowcorporation</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>Glasgow has a lot of current and former telephone exchanges, but they have an odd feature I only just realised. Like post boxes, telephone exchanges often bear the royal cypher of the monarch who was on the throne when they were built. However, they only start doing this with Edward VIII, long after the first exchanges were built. </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/royalcypher" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>royalcypher</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/generalpostoffice" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>generalpostoffice</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/telephoneexchange" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>telephoneexchange</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowcorporation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowcorporation</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a></p>
