Todd Alström<p>Working to deGoogle and deApple myself by the end of the year. Mostly involves buying a Fairphone running Murena's /e/OS, building a Linux desktop machine, and replacing apps/services, but the exercise of mapping all of this out alone is already proving to be fun, enlightening, and liberating.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/degoogle" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>degoogle</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/deapple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>deapple</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/fairphone" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fairphone</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/android" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>android</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/murena" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>murena</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/eos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>eos</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a></p>

JM Horner ™️<p>Is there a way to backup photos and videos from an Apple iPad A1430 running iOS v9.3.6 to a Linux based machine without iTunes or a Windows virtual machine? Dawid<p>As part of my plan to "de-Apple" my life, I need to find a few alternatives to what I'm currently using, mostly Photos, Drive and Mail. While I'm already working on self-hosting Photos (with Immich) and Drive (Nextcloud), I'm not sure how to proceed with Mail.</p><p>Can you recommend any mail service to move to? I need to use my own domain(s) there, and it has to have duo/family plans, because my wife is also using mail in my domain.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/email" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>email</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/mail" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mail</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/deApple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>deApple</span></a></p>
Kancept<p>I wish someone made small, good looking computer speakers that sounded decent like the HomePod minis. Andrew Wedlake<p>Old news, but why we can't trust Apple or Google. Federal laws actually protects them, so they don't have to explain their surveillance practices. Andrew Wedlake<p>Apple's often overlooked and sneaky way to obsolete Macs or iOS devices is to simply link Safari to the OS install. </p><p>Eventually, a device won't be allowed to update, and that will lock the device to a version of Safari.</p><p>True, Macs can install alternate browsers for "a time", but not with iOS, since all browsers share the same webkit engine.</p><p>I installed Linux Mint onto an old 2013 Mac Pro, and it still runs the latest version of Firefox, Brave, or Chrome.</p><p><a href="https://mapstodon.space/tags/DeApple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DeApple</span></a> <a href="https://mapstodon.space/tags/OpenSource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenSource</span></a> <a href="https://mapstodon.space/tags/LinuxMint" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxMint</span></a></p>
